Team Boston earned a 22-10 victory over Team Eagles on Saturday (April 9) at Alumni Stadium in the annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game.
Team Boston got the scoring going in the first quarter, as Xavier Coleman hauled in a 47-yard touchdown pass along the left sideline on a scramble from Phil Jurkovec. Offensive lineman Christian Mahogany took a snap in the Wildcat and rumbled his way into the end zone from two-yards out in the second quarter, making it 14-0 with 9:37 left in the half. A Danny Longman 27-yard field goal put Team Eagles on the board with 3:44 remaining, leading to a 14-3 score at the intermission.
In the fourth quarter, Jack Brandon connected twice with Luke McLaughlin for touchdowns that were credited to both teams – a four-yard connection with 9:25 left for Team Eagles and a 10-yard strike with 2:17 to play for Team Boston. Jacob Kraft converted the two-point conversion on a short completion to the right for a 22-10 final.
For Team Eagles, Emmett Morehead saw the bulk of the snaps and finished the afternoon with 153 yards through the air. Alec Sinkfield carried the ball eight times for 41 yards, while Andre Hines rushed seven times for 41 yards. Taji Johnson made five catches for 81 yards, while Dante Reynolds hauled in five receptions for 58 yards.
Coleman had a versatile performance for Team Boston, rushing four times for 24 yards and reeling in three passes for 75 yards and a TD. McLaughlin made four catches for 38 yards and two touchdowns, while Kraft closed the day with three catches for 19 yards.
The Spring Game was played without traditional tackling on the defensive side of the ball. The secondary starred in the first quarter and five different players logged a pass breakup – CJ Burton, Elijah Jones, and Josh DeBerry for Team Eagles; Jason Scott and Quintayvious Hutchins for Team Boston. Scott also collected the game's lone interception in the fourth quarter from Daelen Menard, returning the ball 46 yards.
Team Eagles' Ty Clemons was credited with three sacks, while Donovan Ezeiruaku and Khris Banks combined for another sack from opposite sides of the defensive line. Hutchins also logged a sack for Team Boston.
Safety Jaiden Woodbey was named the recipient of the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship. The award is given annually since 1993 to a Boston College defensive back who best exemplifies the personal qualities of team dedication and leadership by example, an extraordinary competitive spirit, and personal concern for family friends and teammates.
McGillis, a starting defensive back for Boston College, passed away from Leukemia in 1992. The Eagles' spring game is played in his honor each year.
