Spring Ball Notes: Practice No. 3
March 03, 2022 | Football
First day in pads before Boston College hits spring break.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College football team donned pads for the first time this spring during its third practice of the semester. The third practice of 14 leading up to the spring game was also the final time the team would take the field until after the university's spring break.
Â
Notes From Day Three:
First Track Heard During Team Flex: "Big Rings" (Drake, Future)
Â
Deep Threats: Quarterbacks Phil Jurkovec and Emmett Morehead and their receivers appear to be acclimating to new offensive coordinator John McNulty's system quickly. Wide outs Taji Johnson and Jaden Williams both impressed early in practice with strong moves and receptions in WR vs. DB drills. Each then found success during team periods with Morehead completing two balls to Johnson, including a deep fade. Jurkovec completed passes of 20-plus yards to Williams; once in double-coverage and again one-on-one. Lewis Bond also got in on the action playing with the first and second teams as he snagged an 18-yard completion from Morehead and a pickup of more than 20 yards from Jurkovec, who made the throw from a collapsing pocket.
Â
On the Line: Kevin Cline got an opportunity to play right tackle with the first team during offense vs. defense periods. Cline, who appeared in seven games last season, is one of many returners vying for snaps on a line that looks to replace four multi-year starters. The biggest gain of the day on the ground for the offense came on a Xavier Coleman run through a hole on the right side created by Cline and Christian Mahogany; the lone returning starter to the group.
Â
3rd-and-9: Practice ended with head coach Jeff Hafley calling Jurkovec to the field to complete a third-and-nine pass to the receiver of his choosing. Jurkovec chose Zay Flowers, who selected Elijah Jones to cover him. Jones played Flowers tight, but Jurkovec completed the pass on a crossing pattern as Flowers held on to the ball as he went to the ground with Jones on his back.
