March 31, 2022 | Football
Eagles focus on situational football as spring game approaches.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College football held its 11th spring practice inside Fish Field House on Thursday morning. The emphasis early in practice was on individual position groups before transitioning to situational football.
Â
The Eagles will scrimmage for the first time on Saturday in preparation of the Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game on Saturday, April 9.
Â
Notes From Day 11:
First Track Heard During Team Flex: "Speed Racing" (Kay Flock)
Â
Red Zone: In the first situational offense vs. defense period it was linebacker Vinny DePalma providing the spark for the defense as he was twice in the backfield early to stymie the offense's drive. Running back Xavier Coleman sprang for a touchdown with the second team on a RPO handoff from Emmett Morehead, who expertly baited the defender. Corner Josh DeBerry picked up an interception in the end zone before the offense answered with three straight touchdowns. Running back Alec Sinkfield scored his first of two on a 13-yard run behind blocks from guard Christian Mahogany and tight end Joey Luchetti. Morehead then found receiver Dante Reynolds for a score. The final touchdown came from Phil Jurkovec to Sinkfield in the flat for a catch-and-run TD.
Â
2-Minute Drill: Midway through practice, head coach Jeff Hafley got on the field house mic to present the situation. The offense went to work with 1:01 on the clock, one timeout remaining, down by three and starting at its own 35-yard line. Jurkovec got the offense into plus territory on a completion to wide receiver Jaden Williams. The offense burned its final timeout at the 26-yard line with 20 second left on second down. Jurkovec then threw to Jaelen Gill in the middle for a first down at the five with 13 seconds left. On second-and-goal, Jurkovec against found Gill; this time for the go-ahead touchdown with less than a second on the clock.
Â
2-Minute Drill (Scenario 2): Down eight at the plus 41, 27 seconds on the clock and no timeouts for Jurkovec and the offense. Jurkovec's 10-yard keeper on first down stopped to clock as the chains moved. For the second drive in a row, Jurkovec found Gill in the middle of the field at the five-yard line; this time with five seconds left. Jurkovec spiked the ball and on the ensuing play was flushed left from the pocket and hit Williams for the score. On the game-tying two-point try it was wide receiver Lewis Bond who stopped and turned around at the goal line to receive the pass from Jurkovec and complete the drive.
Â
Final Play: At coach Hafley's request, the music was turned all the way up as the offense set up for third-and-goal from the eighth. Just as the day started with DePalma wreaking havoc in the middle it ended that way as he burst up the middle to force a pressured throw that was caught, but short of the goal line.
Â
Super Bowl Champ: Former Boston College offensive lineman and 10-year NFL veteran Chris Snee was introduced to the team following practice. Snee, an All-Pro right guard, won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants and played for former BC head coach Tom Coughlin and current BC offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo.
