Eagles scrimmage inside Fish with one week until the Spring Game
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Just one week away from the Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game, Boston College Football scrimmaged on Saturday inside Fish Field House for its 12th practice out of 14.Â
Â
The defense had the early edge when Kam Arnold picked off a pass near the front right pylon and returned it the length of the field down the sideline for a touchdown. Arnold also played a key role in a defensive stand inside the 5-yard line which led to a fourth down stop as Phil Jurkovec rolled to his right with all options covered. On the next possession, Xavier Coleman bounced outside to his left for a chunk gain and later finished the drive as he lowered his pads and found a crease from four yards out.
Â
The second team offense gained momentum during the following series on a catch-and-run from Dino Tomlin inside the 15-yard line. Emmett Morehead used play action to escape the pocket to his left and scampered to the endzone just inside the numbers.
Â
Tight ends became the focus of the next drive for the first team offense. Hans Lillis reeled in a seam route for 25 yards to put the Eagles at midfield. Spencer Witter followed with a diving catch to his left along the right hash mark for 15 yards. Neto Okpala stepped up with a sack of Jurkovec for seven yards, forcing a 44-yard field goal from Connor Lytton.
Â
Matthew Rueve took over at quarterback for the two's on the next possession and found Tony Muse up the seam with a precise throw against tight coverage for 25 yards. Andre Hines pounded his way to the 1-yard line on 3rd-and-short and Rueve capped the drive on an untouched keeper to the left side.
Â
Head coach Jeff Hafley set up the situation for the final drives of Saturday's session: ball at the minus 25-yard line, down three with a minute to go and one timeout. Jurkovec immediately found George Takacs over the middle for a gain near midfield after some tough yards after the catch. Jurkovec then lofted a pass over a linebacker between two defensive backs to Jaden Williams in stride for a 48-yard score.
Â
The second team was handed the same situation and quickly drove down the field through the air. Morehead floated a pass along the right sideline to Dante Reynolds, who kept a foot in bounds for 20 yards. Tomlin secured back-to-back receptions, the second of which came on a deep throw to the right sideline to bring the ball to the four. A Quintayvious Hutchins sack forced a loss and a timeout, but Lytton closed practice by drilling a 34-yard field goal.
