BALTIMORE - With 18.8 seconds left in the contest, Cassidy Weeks scored the game-winning goal to lift the Eagles in a 17-16 thriller over No. 2 seed Maryland on Friday evening at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins.Â
The Eagles will pair off against No. 1 seed North Carolina for a third time this season in the title game on Sunday at noon on ESPN. It's the fifth straight championship appearance for the Eagles
Trailing 16-13 with 7:13 left in a second half in which the Eagles never led, they reeled off four straight goals to knock off the Terrapins in a classic matchup.Â
Jenn Medjid, who scored three goals on the day, started the surge before Charlotte North scored two straight times to tie up the contest. With the score tied, the final possession on offense was set up by a caused turnover by Hollie Schleicher and retrieved by Sydney Scales.Â
Both teams traded the first six goals of the game, leading to a 3-3 tie early in the second period. Mckenna Davis started a 3-0 spurt with her lone goal of the game. North capped off the run with back-to-back scores to give BC a 6-3 lead.Â
Maryland turned the momentum around as it responded with four straight goals to go into the half with a 7-6 lead.Â
The Terps led through the entire second half and held a three-goal lead on four different occasions. However, the Eagles stayed within striking distance until the end of the game.Â
North led the offense with six goals on the evening, while Medjid's three scores and two assists gave the senior five points. Kayla Martello turned in three goals, while Weeks finished with a pair of scores and an assist.
