Eagles Fall to Tar Heels in National Title

BALTIMOREÂ - The Boston College lacrosse team fell to North Carolina in an exciting national championship game, 12-11, at Homewood Field on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore.
The third matchup of the season lived up to the billing in front of a sold-out crowd of 8,500 fans - the sixth-largest crowd in a national championship game in women's lacrosse history.
Charlotte North posted a game-high four goals while Cassidy Weeks turned in a hat trick with three scores.
It was a thrilling finish in which neither team led by more than two goals in the second half. After an 8-8 tie going into the third period, Kayla Martello scored early in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles a 9-8 advantage. UNC scored two straight goals before Belle Smith found the back of the net off a rebound to tie up the contest.
Once again, the Tar Heels scored three straight to push the lead 12-10. Weeks scored with 15 seconds left in the contest, but UNC ran the clock out to seal the victory.
Boston College answered a 6-3 first-half deficit by going on a 5-1 run that stretched into the third quarter to capture the lead, 8-7. Jenn Medjid, Weeks and North scored all five goals during the run. UNC tied up the contest going into the fourth period, setting up the stellar finish.
Rachel Hall stepped up after UNC scored on its first five shot attempts, stopping eight shots over the Tar Heels' last 15 shots on goal. Courtney Taylor led the team with six draw controls, and Belle Smith tallied two ground balls.
Medjid, Weeks, North and Melanie Welch were named to the ACC All-Tournament for their efforts.
It was another excellent season for the Eagles, where they finished 19-4 and made a fifth straight appearance in the national title game.Â
