Josiah Ragsdale's Grand Slam Lifts Eagles over UMass at Fenway Park
April 29, 2025 | Baseball
Beck Milner went 4-for-5 with a home run and a double in Beanpot consolation victory
Kyle Kipp started the day on the mound for the Eagles and turned in three stellar innings out of the gate, striking out three over three scoreless frames, twice stranding a runner in scoring position. With one down in the fourth, Vince Cimini and Beck Milner logged back-to-back singles, and both advanced into scoring position on a groundout. A wild pitch to the Fenway backstop brought Cimini across, putting the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the fourth. After Sam McNulty drew a walk, Patrick Roche lined a hard grounder to the third baseman, and a throwing error brought two more across, finishing off a three-run inning for the Eagles.
Kipp continued his strong outing into the fourth. The right-handed sophomore faced just four batters and picked up his fourth strikeout, completing his fourth straight shutout inning and keeping the Eagles in front 3-0 after four full. Beck Milner added a run in the fifth, driving a one-run single to left field, scoring Jack Toomey and extending the lead to 4-0.
The Minutemen broke into the scoring column in the fifth with consecutive RBI hits, a double and a single to cut the lead to 4-2. The rally continued as a sacrifice bunt and RBI double made it a four-run fifth, tying the game at 4-4. JD Ogden came in to pitch the sixth and faced the minimum, fanning the first batter he faced and then inducing a 5-4-3 double play to end the frame. The Minutemen took the lead in the seventh, going up 6-4 on a two-run double after a single and a walk.
Down two in the eighth, Beck Milner responded, driving his first homer of the season into the Fenway Park bullpen, a solo shot to cut the deficit to 6-5. The following three batters drew walks, loading the bases for Josiah Ragsdale. Ragsdale saw a pitch he liked and drove it, crushing a grand slam over the Fenway bullpens, his fourth long ball of the season to complete a five-run eighth and put the Eagles in front, 9-6.
After finishing the seventh inning, Gavin Soares came back out to pitch the eighth and delivered, striking out the final two batters of the frame to strand two baserunners and maintain the 9-6 Boston College lead heading into the ninth inning.
Leading by three, the Eagles offense kept the pressure on. Vince Cimini reached on a hit-by-pitch, and Beck Milner followed with his fourth hit of the game, this time a double high off the Green Monster, scoring Cimini all the way from first. Julio Solier legged out a bunt single, and an RBI fielder's choice from Sam McNulty scored Milner. An inning after his grand slam, Ragsdale added his fifth RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to extend the BC lead to 12-6. Owen DeShazo entered to pinch hit and delivered a perfectly-placed single down the third-base line, hugging the line to score Sam McNulty and extend the lead to 13-6.
Dylan Howanitz came in to pitch the ninth and closed it out, securing the 13-6 win for the Eagles. Boston College will host Maine on Wednesday evening in their second of two mid-week contests, ahead of a home ACC series vs. Stanford starting Friday night at Harrington Athletics Village.
