Eagles Dominate in Fall Ball Opener

NEWPORT, R.I.— The Boston College baseball team began the 2026 fall ball season in stellar fashion against the University of Rhode Island. The Eagles scored 14 runs on 17 hits in 10 innings of play.
Three newcomers helped the Eagles break through in the second inning as Nick Quagliato, on the eighth pitch of his at-bat, singled through the six-hole. Gus Gregory then walked after seven pitches, before Will Matuszak crushed a three-run homer to right field.
The Eagles scored in the third and fifth innings with help from Colin Larson, Ty Mainolfi, Matuszak and Gregory.
A double-steal from Brodey Bitove and Larson after two walks led to a Julio Solier RBI single.
In the eighth inning, Larson started with a double; Sean Martinez moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Chase Massey, in his first at-bat, singled Larson home. Gregory then drove Massey and Aidan Spagna home after Spagna recorded a double.
Late into the game, the Eagles rallied for four two-out runs. Boston College loaded the bases with a Matuszak single, Danny Surowiec hit-by-pitch, and Collin Haug walk. The bases were then cleared by a Bitove double to left-center. Larson singled to drive in Bitove for the Eagles' 14th run.
The Maroon & Gold walked 13 times, stole four bases, and scored in six different innings.
Offensive Statistics:

Colin Larson: Went 4-for-6 with a double, an RBI, a walk, and two stolen bases, reaching safely in five of his seven trips.

Gus Gregory: Went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three walks, reaching base five times.

Will Matuszak: Went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and a walk.

Nick Quagliato: Went 1-for-1 with two walks.

Julio Solier: Went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching and Defense:
The Eagles pitching staff dominated, with 11 strikeouts, and carrying a perfect game into the fifth inning, with a no-hitter into the eighth.
JJ Drennan started the game, making his debut. He tossed a perfect two innings. Jack Ryan also made his debut and retired the side in the third. Despite URI reaching base, Ben Cherico tossed two scoreless innings, continuing the Eagles' strong start and keeping the no-hitter alive.
Brady Miller threw an immaculate inning, striking out the side on nine pitches in the seventh. Kyle Kipp closed the game in the ninth, capping an outstanding game on both ends from the Eagles.
Overall, the defense played error-free baseball to open up the fall slate of games.
Pitching and Defensive Statistics:
