Lacrosse Pushes Past No. 23 UMass

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College lacrosse team downed No. 23 UMass, 16-6, on Wednesday afternoon in Fish Field House.Â
The Eagles are 2-0 and have won eight straight matchups against ranked, non-conference opponents. UMass is 1-1 on the season.Â
BC displayed another balanced offensive performance, as seven different players scored and five found the back of the net at least twice.Â
A second Eagle scored five goals in as many contests, where Kayla Martello fired in a career-high five scores with one assist, tying her personal best with six points.
Mallory Hasselbeck netted her first-career hat trick with three scores and the trio of Courtney Weeks, Cassidy Weeks, and Mckenna Davis tallied two goals.
Belle Smith turned in one goal and four assists for five points. The junior also recorded three caused turnovers. Sydney Scales tallied a team-high best four caused turnovers with three ground balls.Â
Both teams were in a back-and-forth affair in which neither team led by more than two through the early goings of the second period. After UMass had cut the deficit to one, Martello and Cassidy scored three straight times to push the lead to four.Â
UMass wouldn't go away as it responded with two goals to bring the lead down to 7-5.Â
BC went into the half with an 8-5 lead before outscoring the Minutewomen, 8-1, in the second half. Five straight to begin the stanza stretched the advantage to eight, leading BC to pull away for a third straight win in the series.Â
The defense caused 11 turnovers in a second straight victory holding their opponent to under 10 goals. Rachel Hall earned the win between the posts, stopping six shots and Shea Dolce totaled three saves in the final frame.Â
Hollie Schleicher turned in three ground balls with five draw controls. Ryan Smith and Andrea Reynolds led the way in draw controls with six.Â
BC returns to action on Sunday for a top-5 matchup against No. 5 Northwestern in Evanston at 1 p.m. (ET).Â
