Notre Dame Holds Off Boston College 2-1 in South Bend
September 30, 2022 | Men's Soccer
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Sophomore Jack Burgess scored his first collegiate goal, but Boston College's second half comeback came up just short in a 2-1 ACC defeat to Notre Dame on Friday night at Alumni Stadium.
Playing without starting defenders Victor Souza and CJ Williams, the Eagles (2-4-3, 0-3-1 ACC) conceded the game's first goal in the 17th minute. Wyatt Borso collected a cross on the edge of the 18-yard box and curled a left-footed shot inside the far post to beat Leon Musial.
Notre Dame (5-3-1, 2-2-0 ACC) doubled its lead just before halftime in the 41st minute on a right-footed finish to the near post from Eno Nto, who ran onto a flick-on header from Daniel Russo on the edge of the 18.
BC pulled a goal back in the 54th minute when Ted Cargill slipped a ball to the right wing for Burgess. The sophomore cut inside to his left foot and bent a cross into the box toward Javi Gaytan which took a slight deflection inside the left post.
Bryan Dowd helped to preserve the 2-1 Fighting Irish cushion with back-to-back point blank saves on Amos Shapiro-Thompson and Burgess from close range in the 74th minute.
Both schools finished the night with 12 shots, although the Eagles out-shot the Irish 10-7 in the second half. Cargill led the team with four shots, while Burgess and Shapiro-Thompson accounted for six others with three apiece.
Musial earned his third straight start in net for BC and made a pair of saves.
Boston College returns to the Heights next Friday night when it hosts NC State at 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
