Eagles Earn Win Over Villanova in Season Opener

NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College women's soccer team earned a season-opening 2-0 win over Villanova on Thursday night at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
After a scoreless first half, BC struck 12 minutes into the second. The Eagles added an insurance goal in the 80th minute to seal the home and season-opening victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 57' | Riley Kerber carried the ball down the right side of the field and cut in along the top of the box, evading three defenders to open up a lane to Emily Sapienza. Sapienza sent a long one-touch look into the upper-right corner of the net.
- 80' | After earning a penalty kick by drawing a handball inside the box, Claire Mensi converted the attempt.
- Boston College had a 17-5 lead in shots on goal.
- Boston College had a 6-0 lead in corner kicks.
- Wiebke Willebrandt made two saves for her first shutout of the season … it is the third shutout of her career … this is the second consecutive season opener that Willebrandt has posted a shutout.
- Boston College is now 12-6-1 in the all-time series with Villanova, including a mark of 9-2-0 in home games.
- The Eagles are now 3-1-0 in home openers under head coach Jason Lowe and 3-2-0 overall in the last five.
- Ragna Magnúsdóttir, Sophia Lowenberg, Riley Kerber and Sydney Segalla made their collegiate debuts … Emily Sapienza, Claire Mensi and Alycia Morin made their Boston College debuts.
- Claire Mensi's goal was her first at Boston College and seventh of her career … she is now 4-for-5 on penalty kick attempts in her career.
- Emily Sapienza's goal was her first at Boston College and fourth of her career.
- Riley Kerber picked up her first collegiate point with an assist.
- Sam Smith led BC with a game-high four shots on goal.
- The Eagles will travel to nearby Northeastern on Sunday to take on the Huskies at 1 p.m. at Parsons Field.
