O’Neil Nets Late Winner to Lift UConn Past No. 18 BC 5-4
January 08, 2022 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Kevin O'Neil fired a shot into the top left corner with 32.2 seconds left in regulation on Saturday afternoon to hand UConn a 5-4 Hockey East victory over No. 18 Boston College in a back-and-forth affair at Kelley Rink.
The loss snapped the Eagles unbeaten streak at six as they dropped to 10-6-3 (5-4-2 HEA), while the Huskies improved to 9-7-0 (6-4-0 HEA) and evened the regular season series between the schools at 1-1-0.
Prior to O'Neil's winner, Patrick Giles had tied the game at 4-4 on a partial breakaway with 54.5 seconds remaining in the third period. Giles added an assist for a multi-point night, while fellow seniors Casey Carreau and Marc McLaughlin lit the lamp along with sophomore Colby Ambrosio.
Carreau handed BC an early lead just 1:50 into the contest when he beat Darion Hanson (21 saves) high short side from the right circle with a heavy snap shot.
McLaughlin doubled the lead at 4:31 of the second, whipping a backhand pass from Matt Argentina under Hanson's pads for his league-leading 14th of the year. Rookie Jack Dempsey collected the second assist for his first career point.
Hudson Schandor answered on the next shift for UConn, picking the top left corner from the slot, and Carter Turnbull tied the game at 10:50 on a wraparound.
Artem Schlaine tipped a left point shot past Eric Dop 63 seconds into the third to give the Huskies their first lead, but Ambrosio responded at 7:24. Giles created a turnover at neutral ice and Ambrosio buried a low shot from the left faceoff dot for his sixth of the season.
Jachym Kondelik tipped a shot from Ryan Tverberg off the left post and in to restore UConn's lead on the power play with five minutes left. Giles' game-tying tally was his ninth goal of the season, but O'Neil provided the heroics just 22 seconds later.
