Â
THE CHARLOTTE NORTH SHOW
Charlotte North has been must-watch TV all season. She's been a part of two #SCTop10 plays already this season, connecting with goalie Rachel Hall on a 51-yard outlet pass that she took 50 yards herself to score against UAlbany and an incredible behind-the-back goal against USC. North has 31 goals and five assists on the year to go along with 69 draw controls. She is sixth in the nation 8.62 draw controls per game. A native of Dallas, North has a .620 shooting percentage and .860 SOG percentage. Charlotte North was called "Electric" according to US Lacrosse Magazine and was the March cover athlete.
Â
RECORD-TYING PERFORMANCE
Jenn Medjid put on one of the best offensive performances in program history in BC's 18-3 win over No. 16 Louisville. She converted nine of her 11 shots to tie Sam Apuzzo's 2018 record for goals in a single game at BC. Seven of her nine goals came in the first half.
Â
FRESHMEN ON THE BIG STAGE
Even with a much older college lacrosse landscape because of the extra year of eligibility, BC has some freshmen who have really stepped up early. Belle Smith, the No. 2 incoming recruiting according to Inside Lacrosse, is currently leading the middie's with 20 goals and four assists. Smith has scored in every game to start her career on The Heights. She has been playing the best lacrosse of her young career, with eight points (7G, 1A) last weekend against Louisville. Smith is second in the nation and leads the ACC with a .741 shooting percentage.
The backbone of BC's defense is held by two freshmen in Hunter Roman and Sydney Scales. Both earned starts in each of the last four games and have appeared in all eight games this year. BC's second midfield line is made up of mostly freshmen. Annabelle Hasselbeck has two goals and three assists on the year, Kayla Martello has three goals on all three of her shots and Andrea Reynolds has gotten more run as of late and scored her first-career goal on Sunday against Louisville.
Â
A JOURNEY UNLIKE ANY OTHER
Senior Melanie Welch has shown incredible resilience since coming to BC. She walked onto the team as a freshman cold-emailing Coach Walker-Weinstein and earning a tryout. Welch then tore her ACL twice. Once in her sophomore year and once in her junior year. She saw action in eight games prior to the 2021 season and now in 2021 has started all eight games with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Â
Welch is receiving the #19 jersey for the game, given to the student-athlete that most embodies the values of Welles Crowther.
