North Carolina Takes Two from BC Softball

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the top of the seventh as the Tar Heels defeated Boston College 7-3 in game one of a doubleheader Friday at Anderson Stadium. BC was the home team in game one of the ACC Pod against the Tar Heels.

The Tar Heels completed the doubleheader sweep with an 11-2 win in game two.

UNC struck first with one unearned run in the first inning as Kristina Burkhardt singled to left and Destiny Middleton scored on a throwing error.

North Carolina scored twice in the second, including an unearned run on a throwing error, to regain the lead at 3-1. Shayla Thompson started the two-out rally with an infield single to drive in a run and Middleton scored on a throwing error.

The Eagles again answered quickly in the bottom of the second as Gianna Randazza launched her first career home run to right center to even the game at three. Randazza's two-run blast was BC's third homer of the season.

Both starting pitchers settled in after the early scoring in the first two innings to keep the game scoreless until the seventh.

North Carolina broke through in the top of the seventh with four runs. The Tar Heels loaded the bases to start the frame before Kiersten Licea broke the tie with a RBI single to left to give UNC a 4-3 lead. The Tar Heels added three additional runs to push the lead to 7-3.

In game two, the Tar Heels jumped out quickly with three runs on one swing in the first as Licea hit a three-run home run to give UNC a 3-0 lead.

BC got one run back in the top of the third when Maddy Carpe scored on a passed ball to cut the UNC lead to 3-1.

Gianna Boccagno crushed her second home run of the week with a solo shot to left in the fourth to bring BC to within one at 3-2. North Carolina quickly answered with four runs in the home half of the inning to lead 7-2 after four innings of play.

The two wins were the first of the season for North Carolina (2-0, 2-0 ACC) while Boston College dropped to 2-6 and 1-3 in the ACC.
