October 29, 2021 | Men's Hockey
BURLINGTON, Vt. – No. 9 Boston College had a potential game-winning goal overturned in overtime, and Philip Lagunov tipped a shot inside the right post with two minutes left to lift Vermont to a 5-4 Hockey East victory on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The Eagles fell back to .500 overall at 3-3-1 (1-1-0 HEA), while the Catamounts (1-4-0, 1-0-0 HEA) collected their first win of the season and snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series.
Senior Patrick Giles scored a pair of goals for BC and nearly capped off a hat trick in overtime, but his third goal was called back after video review due to goalie interference.
Jack St. Ivany registered a goal, two assists and a career-high seven shots, while fellow senior Jack McBain scored in his 100th career game for a career-high seven-game point streak. Sophomore Nikita Nesterenko collected a pair of assists.
Lagunov led Vermont with a pair of goals, including the winner during a 4-on-3 power play in the extra session. Boston College out-shot UVM 43-21 on the night with 14 shots in each period.
McBain's goal 44 seconds into the second period gave the Eagles a 3-0 cushion, but Vermont scored the game's next four goals to take its first lead. Giles' second of the night with 6:26 remaining sent the contest into overtime.
The teams close the weekend series on Saturday night in Burlington at 7 p.m.
