Boston College Softball Travels to Atlanta for the ACC/BIG10 Challenge
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College softball team takes the field this weekend for the annual BIG10/ACC Challenge hosted by Georgia Tech. First pitch from Atlanta is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Friday against Michigan State. The games can be followed via live stats.
Â
The Eagles will face Michigan State twice; with game two slated for Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. BC has faced the Spartans three times in program history, but has failed to record a victory in those meetings.
Â
Boston College will take on the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and Sunday morning at 10 a.m. The Eagles only meeting with the Illini came in February of 2016, where the Eagles dropped both games of the weekend series.
Â
With this Eagles squad coming off an 0-4 opening weekend at the Texas Classic, head coach Ashley Obrest said the team is wasting no time turning the page and preparing for the schedule ahead.
Â
"Once you have your first weekend in the books, your time back on campus seems to get shorter and shorter," said Obrest. "Monday is always our day off and then Tuesday and Wednesday are spent breaking down what we did well and what we need to address and fix before our next games. The ACC/Big 10 Challenge is a big weekend. Yes, it's about us, but it's also about representing the ACC. Pride and bragging rights are on the line this weekend and we expect to come out and play at a much higher level."
Â
In the team's first four games, freshman catcher Gianna Boccagno was a bright spot for a stagnant offense, driving in four runs in the final two games, two of which game via solo home runs.
Â
"Gianna started off her career in a very impressive manner and I'm not surprised at all by her performance and numbers," said Obrest. "She works tirelessly in the cage, is confident in her swing, and simply attacks the game."
Â
With the team's pitching staff having a new look, three different Eagles were given starts on the mound in Texas: CC Cook, Camryn Dolby, and Susannah Anderson. It was Anderson, a freshman, who logged the most innings on the weekend.
Â
"Susannah threw the most innings for us in Austin and I feel as if she truly improved pitch by pitch, inning by inning and game by game," said Obrest. "You saw that in her performance against Texas on Sunday. She is so invested in her pitching and wants this team to succeed and will ultimately do whatever it takes to help the team win."
