Martinez’s Big Day Leads Eagles to First Victory

Boston College Softball Outlasts Michigan State in 10 Innings
How It Happened:
The Eagles wasted no time in this one, with Lexi DiEmmanuele reaching on a single to the right side to start the game. Lexi stole second base on the next pitch. Jenna Ergle advanced the runner to third on an infield groundout. Maddison Hamilton walked, and stole second on the next pitch. The throw to second went into centerfield, and Lexi scored the games first run, with Hamilton advancing to third on the throwing error. Gianna Boccagno walked, and in stepped Emme Martinez with runners at the corners, and one out. Martinez hit a hard ground ball to second, and was thrown out at first, but Hamilton scored on the fielder's choice to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Skip ahead to the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Spartans loaded the bases with one out. Kelly Zackrison stepped to the plate and roped a double to the left field wall, driving in all three runs before being thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. MSU led 3-2 heading into the top of the fifth inning.
Boston College responded in the top half of the fifth inning, with Maddison Hamilton and Emme Martinez reaching on a pair of singles. Kristin Giery walked to load the bases. Carlie Sanders ripped a ground ball the forced the throw home, but Hamilton was safe on a throwing error. Martinez was thrown out at home trying to advance, but the Eagles tied the game 3-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
The Spartans loaded the bases with one out to begin the bottom of the fifth inning. A single to left field by Caitie Ladd regained the lead. MSU added two more runs on an infield single and a throwing error to stretch its lead to 6-3. Zackrison added a sacrifice fly before the side was retired, giving MSU a 7-3 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning.
The Eagles battled back in the top of the sixth, with Ellie Mataya singling to left field, and DiEmmanuele doubling to left-center to. Ergle drove a double to right field, scoring two runs, and cutting into the Spartans lead. After Boccagno advanced the runners on a fielder's choice, Martinez stepped to the plate with runners on second and third, and one out. Martinez ripped a single to left field to score another BC run, cutting the deficit to 7-6. With runners at the corners and one out, Kristin Giery hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to tie the game 7-7 before the side was retired.
Skip ahead to the top of the 10th inning, when Ergle led off with a double to left-center field. Hamilton laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Ergle to third. Boccagno reached on an error by the shortstop to score the go-ahead run from third, and Martinez ripped a single to left field and advanced to second on an error, scoring Boccagno, to give the Eagles a 9-7 lead, and their first victory of the season.
