Eagles Fall to Fighting Illini

ATLANTA, GA – The Boston College softball team dropped game two of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge to the Illinois Fighting Illini in five innings by a score of 12-3.

How It Happened:

The Fighting Illini started the scoring in the top of the first inning with an RBI double off the bat of Bell Loya. Maddison Demers singled through the right side on the next pitch to give Illinois an early 2-0 lead. Alexis Carrillo drove in the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Illini a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.

Illinois added to its lead in the top of the second, when Katie Wingerter reached on a walk, and advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Rhein Trochim reached on a fielder's choice to, scoring Wingerter from third base. After a Kiana Sherlund single up the middle, Carly Thomas cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right field, extending the Illini lead to 7-0. Â

The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Jenna Ergle hit a solo home run with one out to cut into the Illinois lead, 7-1.

Illinois bounced back in the top of the third, when Carrillo singled up the middle and advanced to second on a fielder' choice. Trochim hit an infield singled to put runners on first and third with two outs. Trochim stole second, forcing the throw and allowing Carrillo to score the eight Illini run.

In the top of the fourth inning, Annie Fleming led off with a double to left field. Loya laid down a sec bunt, and Fleming scored on a throwing error. Demers singled through the right said, and Loya scored from second to increase the Illinois lead, 10-1. Stephanie Abello doubled in the ensuing at-bat to put runners on second and third with no outs for the Illini. Illinois added two more runs in the inning, capped by an RBI single from Trochim to lead 12-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Eagles fought to the very end in this one. With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Olivia Markopoulos singled through the right side to plate the second BC run of the game. Carly Severini stepped to the plate and added a single to right field to cut the deficit to 12-3, which was your final.
