Ellie Mataya Went 3-4 With 2 RBI in the Eagles 7-6 Win Over Michigan State
ATLANTA, GA – The Boston College softball team beat Michigan State 7-6 in game three of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Saturday morning.
Â
How It Happened:
Â
Camryn Dolby started the game in impressive fashion, striking out three consecutive Spartan's to end the first inning. Lexi DiEmmanuele led the bottom of the inning off with a single to left field, and Ellie Mataya followed that with a single up the middle. Emme Martinez stepped to the plate and roped the first pitch to the left field gap to drive in the first run of the game for the Eagles. With runners at the corners and no outs, Gianna Boccagno lifted a fly ball to left field, deep enough to score the runner from third, and give the Eagles an early 2-0 lead.
Â
The Spartans responded in the top of the first, when Katie Quinlan led off with a double to left center field. Ebonee Echols followed up with an RBI triple to center field, and scored on a throwing error to third, to tie the game 2-2.
Â
Michigan State's Melanie Baccay led off the top of the fourth inning with a double to right center field. The next two Spartans reached on walks to load the bases with no outs. Â Caitie Ladd lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score the third MSU run, leading 3-2 moving to the bottom of the fourth inning.
Â
The Eagles put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. Carly Severini drove a high fly ball to center field that was misplayed, allowing Maddison Hamilton to score from second, and Kristin Giery to advance to third. With runners at second and third and two outs, DiEmmanuele singled up the middle to score the go-ahead run from third. In the ensuing at bat, Mataya drove in two runs with a single up the middle to give the Eagles a 6-3 lead.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jenna Ergle blasted a solo home run to left field to pad the BC lead, 7-3.
Â
The Spartans loaded the bases to begin the top of the sixth inning. A Kaitlyn Eveland single, and a Joanna Bartz walk cut into the Eagles lead. Quinlan added a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 7-6, but the Eagles held on to win.
