Eagles Top Dartmouth in 2019 Opener

The swim and dive team found the win in their first of two meets this weekend
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Boston College swim and dive team reigned successful in their premiere meet of the New Year, as they took down Dartmouth in a dual meet at home Friday afternoon. The women's team won by a 157.5-141.5 margin while the men's team held a 165-133 advantage.
Highlighting the meet for the women's team was eight first-place finishes, including wins in both the 200-yard freestyle and medley relays. Maura Grimes, Victoria Lin and Ali Kea contributed in both relays while Taylor Covington added to the 1:46.36 medley finish and Haley Dolan helped push to the first-place 1:36.01 finish in the freestyle.
Maura Grimes also earned a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 57.67, while Victoria Lin took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.58. Ali Kea placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a 24.22 finish while Haley Dolan placed second in the same event (24.26). Grace Edwards found a similar result in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in first place with a time of 2:07.17, while Maura Grimes placed just behind her in 2:07.78. Alexa Lantin placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke as she finished in 2:24.67.
For the men's team, Taylor Cortens earned three individual wins and contributed to one first-place relay finish. His 100-yard individual medley time of 52.64 set the all-time program record, as the senior captain now holds 11 Boston College records. He also placed first in the 100-yard butterfly (51.16) and 100-yard backstroke (52.14). The top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke were swept by the Eagles, as Talmage Corey earned second (52.98) and Alex Shehab placed third (53.23).
The relay team of Michael Hinton, Damion Ribeiro, Colin Deredyn and Kevin Chandra earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.97. Taylor Cortens, Billy Miller, Colin O'Leary and Colin Derdeyn earned first in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in 1:33.50.Â
Charlie Kleinsmith and Peter Shepanzyk shared the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke, each finishing with a time of 2:10.85. Billy Miller finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 58.12, as Sami Fares placed second (58.82) and Charlie Kleinsmith finished third (59.25). Similar results were found in the 50-yard freestyle, as Colin Deredyn (21.24), Kevin Chandra (21.80) and Damion Ribeiro (21.82) swept the top-three finishes.Â
The Eagles wrap up their 2018-19 home meets Saturday afternoon, hosting Marist at 1:00 p.m. in the Flynn Recreation Complex Pool.
