Eagles Fall to Indiana in Second Day of ACC/B1G Ten Challenge

ATLANTA, Ga. – Despite out-hitting the Hoosiers, 7-6, the Boston College softball team lost, 8-3, to Indiana in the second day of the ACC/B1G Ten Challenge on Saturday morning.

BC scored first when junior Lexi DiEmmanuele and freshman Emme Martinez reached home in the bottom of the second inning. Indiana took a 4-2 lead in the top of the third behind a bases-clearing double by Katie Lacefield. The Hoosiers added on two more insurance runs in the fourth inning. The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning by loading the bases, but they were unable to score and Indiana drove home two more runs in the top of the seventh to secure an 8-3 victory.

Senior Chloe Sharabba extended her hitting streak to eight games with a single on the day. The Eagles look for their third win of the season when they face Nebraska in the final day of the ACC/B1G Ten Challenge tomorrow, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.

Game 1 Turning Point:.
Indiana took a 4-2 lead in the top of the third inning when Taylor Uden was forced home on a walk and Lacefield blasted a double to pick up three RBIs. The Hoosiers would lead for the remainder of the game and secure the victory by adding two more runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

BC Highlights:
- Sharabba picked up her team-leading 11th hit of the season. She has now picked up a hit in every game this season and currently has an eight-game hitting streak.
- Senior Annie Murphy and DiEmmanuele led the team on the day with two hits each. Murphy collected two singles and an RBI and DiEmmanuele blasted a double, scored a run and had one stolen base. Murphy is now second on the team with eight hits on the season so far.
- The Eagles had four stolen bases as a team on the day, the most bags they have stolen in a game this season.
- Freshman Cami Sellers notched a single in the third inning. The rookie leads all freshmen on the team with five hits on the season.

How it Happened:
- DiEmmanuele led off the bottom of the second inning with a double to left center. Martinez reached base on a fielding error. Martinez advanced to second on a throwing error and DiEmmanuele scored. Martinez advanced to third on a ground out and freshman CC Cook drew a walk to put runners on the corners with one out. Senior Annie Murphy reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Martinez to give BC a 2-0 lead.
- In the top of the third inning, Rachel O'Malley walked and advanced to second on a single by Gabbi Jenkins. Rebecca Blitz walked to load the bases with one out. Uden walked to force home O'Malley. Lacefield hit a bases-clearing double down the left field line to pick up three RBIs and give Indiana a 4-2 lead.
- Annika Baez led off the fourth inning with a single to shortstop and O'Malley was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. Taylor Lambert reached on an error, allowing both Sarah Galovich, who pinch ran for Baez, and O'Malley to score. The Hoosiers then loaded the bases, but senior Jordan Chimento threw a runner out at second and Frei picked up a strikeout to hold Indiana to two runs in the inning, making the score 6-2.
- Martinez led off the fourth inning with a single and advanced to second on a ground out. The rookie moved to second on a single up the middle by Murphy. Sharabba reached base on an error, allowing Martinez to score as the Eagles trailed 6-3.
- BC loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning as junior Allyson Moore reached on a catcher's interference and Cook reached on a fielder's choice. Murphy hit a single to shortstop to load the bases and put the winning at the plate, but the Eagles were unable to score.
- Indiana tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning when Maddie Westmoreland drove a double to center field to drive home Lacefield and Uden, who reached base on a walk and fielder's choice, respectively, increasing its lead to 8-3.
BC returns to action when it participates in the third and final day of ACC-B1G Ten Challenge on Sunday, Feb. 18. The Eagles will play Nebraska at 10 a.m.
