Apuzzo Reaches Century Mark in NCAA Win Over Canisius
May 12, 2017 | Lacrosse
Eagles limit the Griffins to just nine goals, including only two in the second half
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 13 Boston College lacrosse team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament behind a 21-8 victory over MAAC Tournament champion Canisius at Syracuse's SU Soccer Stadium on Friday afternoon. BC improved to 14-6 on the season, while Canisius fell to 15-5 on the year.
This is the second time in program history BC has won its opening game in the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles will now face sixth-seeded host Syracuse at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the NCAA Second Round.
After trailing 5-2 with 16:30 left in the first half, BC went on a six-goal run to take the lead for good and closed the game out by out-scoring the Griffins 19-4, including an 11-2 mark in the second half.
Sophomore Sam Apuzzo tallied seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) to move her season point total to 100 points, becoming the first-ever player in Boston College history to score at least 100 points in a year. Her second goal of the game was also her 66th of the season to claim the program's single-season goal mark. She added another goal later in the game and will enter the NCAA Second Round with 67 goals this season.
Senior Kate Weeks added seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) and matched the previous single-season goal record of 65, originally set by Covie Stanwick '15 in 2013.
Junior Kenzie Kent (2 goals, 5 assists) also added seven points as the trio of Apuzzo, Weeks and Kent shared the team lead in the victory.
Sophomomre Lauren Daly made five saves in the second half – including a perfect 3-for-3 mark on free position shots – while Zoe Ochoa stopped four in the first half.
The Eagles' defensive effort kept the nation's leading goal scorer – and second-leading point-getter – Canisius' Erica Evans, to just a single point on an assist. Evans finished the day with six fouls. The Eagles also allowed only two goals in the second half, while keeping the Griffins scoreless for 24:25.
