Draw Control Record Helps Send Eagles to Second Round
May 13, 2017 | Lacrosse
BC preps to face host Syracuse on Sunday in the NCAA Second Round
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - In the Boston College lacrosse team's 21-9 victory over MAAC champion Canisius on Friday in the NCAA Tournament's first round, a multitude of the Eagles' program and individual records fell, including:
But after the game, there was just one less obvious mark that head coach Acacia Walker wanted to talk about: the Eagles set their single-season draw control record, notching their 300th of the year in the contest.
Â
"I think draw controls are one of the few stats we actually pay attention to because it takes a full team effort to win get the draw control," Walker said.
Â
With 16 draw controls on Friday against the Griffins, the Eagles moved their season total to 300, passing the 2014 squad's previous record of 297.
Â
"Getting to 297 in 2014 was huge because we had some draw specialists. And now to get to a point where we can even come close to the record is so exciting for the team."
Â
Friday, draw controls proved even more important as the Eagles found themselves trailing Canisius 5-2 midway through the first half. But a series of wins in the second half of the stanza helped give Eagles valuable possession as the team erased the Griffins' lead and went into the intermission with a 10-7 advantage.
Â
"In women's lacrosse, you know if you have the ball, your odds of scoring are so much better. So when we went on that run, Sam (Apuzzo) got hot and the players started doing a great job in the draw circle coming off the line. It allowed us to put our foot on the gas pedal," Walker continued.
Â
Entering Sunday's game against Syracuse, the Eagles rank ninth nationally in draw controls with an average of 15.00 per game. And while Apuzzo leads the team with 57 on the season, her 2.95 per game average only ranks 91st nationally. But when you add in Dempsey Arsenault's 43 and Elizabeth Miller's 37, you have a trio of players attacking the draw to gain the Eagles possession. Four more players have at least 15 draw controls, while a total of 12 players have collected at least 10 this season.
Â
"We're so excited because Emma (Schurr) went in on the draw for the first time in the year and she did a specialty draw that's really hard to do. And she hasn't done one draw control all season long," Walker added.
Â
A true team effort.
