October 05, 2017 | Field Hockey
BC honors alumni, including 1997 Big East Championship team
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The eighth-ranked Boston College field hockey team hosts No. 11 Louisville on Friday and No. 13 Harvard on Sunday to start a three-game home stand at the Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex. Both games will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
Â
The Eagles (8-4, 0-4 ACC) are looking for their first Atlantic Coast Conference win on Friday. They have won all eight of their non-conference games, including four ranked opponents, but have lost Syracuse, at North Carolina in overtime, at Virginia and in a shootout to Duke, all ACC teams ranked in the top 10. After each BC loss, the Eagles responded with victories in the following games, including three shutouts.
Â
Louisville (8-4, 2-1 ACC) comes to The Heights on a four-game win streak with a double overtime victory over Syracuse and a shootout win against Wake Forest in conference action. The Cardinals fell, 5-0, to Duke to start league play. While they have been perfect at home with a 6-0 record, the Cards are winless on the road, going 0-4.
Â
BC is 2-1 in the all-time series against Louisville. Both wins came on the road with the Cardinals earning a 3-2 victory in Newton in 2015. Junior Frederique Haverhals has scored in both games against Louisville in her career, including the game-winner last year.
Â
The Eagles and Harvard (8-2) will meet for the 30th time on Sunday. BC has won the last 12 meetings between the two in-state squads. The last loss came in 2003 in a 2-1 contest at home. Overall, BC is 11-2 against the Crimson at home. Haverhals, along with classmates Ymke Rose Gote and Lucy Lytle have all notched three total points in the two previous matchups.
Â
BC is 4-4 against ranked teams in 2017. Before hitting the road for the final three games of the season, the Eagles have four of five in the friendly confides of Newton Campus – Duke (Sept. 29), Louisville (Oct. 6), Harvard (Oct. 8) and Northeastern (Oct. 13).
Â
On Friday, the Eagles will honor the 1997 Big East championship team at halftime. It marks the 20th anniversary of one of BC's three conference tournament titles. After starting the '97 season 5-4, the Eagles won 10 of their last 13 games. The team featured two All-Americans in Andrea Durko and Joy Ramsbotham, the Big East Defensive Player of the year (Ramsbotham), the Big East Tournament Most Outstanding Player (Durko) and four named All-Big East. The Eagles defeated Providence and Connecticut, both by a score of 2-0, to capture the Big East title on their home turf.
Â
On Sunday, the Eagles will host the 11th annual MS Game in honor of former student-athlete Kathleen Murphy, a 2009 Boston College graduate. Murphy was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in April 2007, then a forward on the team. MS is a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information between the brain and body. Murphy went on to play 79 games in her BC career, tallying 11 goals, nine assists and 31 points. The Eagles have participated in the MS Walk each year as part of "Murphy's Law." Murphy's former coach Ainslee Lamb, who was at BC's helm for 10 years, will be in attendance as she is working with the Harvard field hockey team.
