BOSTON, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team won its second straight Beanpot championship and 10th overall with an 8-0 win against Harvard Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
The 10 Beanpot titles are the most among the four participants.
Five different pitchers combined for the second BC shutout of the season. Junior Andrew Lawrence got his second win of the year after throwing 3.0 innings and allowing one hit. Senior Nate Bayuk and junior Matt Brazis both threw 2.0 innings while senior Garret Smith and sophomore Hunter Gordon tossed an inning.
Lawrence also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Freshman Tom Bourdon was 2-for-3 and junior Spenser Payne drove in a pair. Smith hit a pair of doubles and scored twice.
BC took the lead with a run in the top of the second. Junior Anthony Melchionda led off with a first-pitch single and tagged on a deep fly to right to get into scoring position. Payne stepped to the plate with two outs and hit a grounder up the middle, but the second baseman missed the back hand stab which allowed Melchionda to score.
The Eagles tacked on another run in the fourth to push the lead to 2-0. Smith led off with an opposite field double to the gap in right and Melchionda did his job by moving him over to third with a groundout. Lawrence helped his own cause with an RBI single on a 2-0 count.
Two more BC runs in the sixth made it a 4-0 game. Smith led off and pulled a double to the gap in left and then Lawrence dropped an RBI single in front of the right fielder for his second RBI. After a fielder's choice for the second out, junior Marc Perdios reached second on a failed pickoff attempt. Payne made Harvard pay when he belted an RBI single to left.
BC (15-24) put the game out of reach with four runs in the top of the ninth. Junior Brad Zapenas and sophomore Matt McGovern came up with RBI singles and Perdios and Payne forced bases loaded walks for the other two runs.
Dillon O'Neill and Jake McGuiggan both had a pair of hits for Harvard (9-32).
The Eagles have two days off before hosting No. 1 Virginia this weekend for a three-game ACC series.
