Baseball Loses Series Opener To No. 1 Virginia

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Danny Hultzen allowed one hit in 7.0 innings of work to lead No. 1 Virginia past the Boston College baseball team, 17-0, Friday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
The one hit allowed by Hultzen, and the entire Virginia staff, was an infield single to senior Garret Smith in the fourth inning. Hultzen struck out eight Eagles while walking one and hitting a batter. Shane Halley pitched the last two innings and did not allow a base runner.
Kenny Swab was 3-for-5 at the plate for the Cavaliers (41-4, 19-3 ACC) with a double, triple and five RBIs. Steven Proscia was 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI while Chris Taylor, John Barr and Jared King each had two hits and an RBI. Keith Werman was 2-for-3 with a double and drove in three.
Virginia jumped out to the early lead with seven runs in the first three innings and never looked back. Taylor led the game off with a single up the middle and then a hit batsman put two men on base in the top of the first. Hicks moved them both into scoring position with a hit-and-run groundout. Proscia stepped to the plate and hit a grounder to third that BC went home with. The ball bounced off Taylor's back and went into the UVa dugout which allowed both runners to score.
The Cavaliers put up another run in the second to push the lead to 3-0. Reed Gragnani took a fastball on the arm with one out and then a groundout moved him up a base. Taylor singled up the middle for the run.
UVa made it a 7-0 game with four more runs in the third. Hicks led off with a double and King drove him in with a one-out single. Swab hit an RBI triple out of the reach of the diving right fielder and David Coleman doubled to the same spot for another run. Werman singled him in to cap the scoring in the inning.
BC (15-25, 6-15) will try to even the series Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
