Eagles Defeat No. 6 North Carolina to Open Series

A.J. Colarusso and Cesar Gonzalez combine to hold Tar Heels to one run
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 22 Boston College Baseball (22-9, 9-4 ACC) defeated No. 6 North Carolina (25-5-1, 9-4 ACC) in the first of three games this weekend, 6-1.
A.J. Colarusso started for the Eagles and went six innings, giving up a run while striking out seven. Cesar Gonzalez closed out the game, going three scoreless innings while striking out five.
The Tar Heels got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when they attempted to steal and, on an error, were able to get a runner home.
Boston College tied it up immediately at the top of the third when Julio Solier led off the inning with a double. He was advanced to third on a groundout by Ty Mainolfi before a sacrifice fly by Nick Wang to right field brought him in.
The Eagles would take the lead at the top of the fourth when Carter Hendrickson led off the inning with a hit by pitch. He was advanced to second by Luke Gallo and then came into score when Gunnar Johson singled to left field.
Boston College would make it 3-1 in the top of the sixth when Danny Surowiec would take first after being hit by a pitch. He would move to third after a single from Johnson. Surowiec would come in to score when Colin Larson singled through the infield.
In the top of the eighth, the Eagles would get their fourth run. Boston College would load the bases after a double by Gallo, a single by Johnson, and a walk by Larson. Solier would take the bases-loaded walk, which would allow him to bring in Gallo from third.
The Eagles would score two more runs in the top of the ninth to close the game out. Wang would lead off the inning by reaching on an error before being brought in by a triple by Jack Toomey. Toomey's triple is his fifth of the season and ties for the second most in a single season. Toomey would then score after Hendrickson flew out to right field.
Gonzalez would close out the game by inducing back-to-back fly outs to earn his second save of the season.
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action tomorrow night when they take on No. 6 North Carolina in the second of three games, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on ACCNX.
