CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The No. 6 Miami Hurricanes (8-1, 2-0 ACC) used a six-run sixth inning to defeat the Boston College Eagles (6-6, 0-2 ACC), 8-3, in front of a sellout crowd Saturday night at Mark Light Stadium.
The Eagles led 3-2 entering the bottom of the fourth inning before the Hurricanes scored six times, five runs coming from two homers, to defeat BC for the second consecutive evening.
Tony Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead the BC offense. Garret Smith added a hit and RBI.
Dan Houston (1-1) suffered the loss. The right-handed junior worked 3.0 + innings with three strikeouts and three walks.
BC pushed across a run in the top of the second inning off Miami starter Enrique Garcia. Eric Campbell doubled to right-center field to lead off the frame. Mickey Wiswall then reached by way of an error. After Michael Belfiore sacrificed both runners into scoring position, Matt Hamlet drove in Campbell on a ground out to shortstop to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Miami threatened in the bottom half of the second when they loaded the bases with one out. Ryan Jackson hit a line drive right to Belfiore at first base, who promptly stepped on first for an unassisted double play to escape the Hurricane threat.
The Eagles extended the lead in third on a RBI single to right field by Sanchez. Barry Butera started the two-out rally with a double down the leftfield line. Butera scored on the hit by Sanchez to give BC a 2-0 lead.
Yonder Alonso hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning to give Miami its first run of the game.
In the fourth, the Eagles scored a run for the third straight inning to make the score 3-1. Wiswall crossed home plate on a ground ball hit by Smith that Hurricanes' shortstop Ryan Jackson bobbled to help extend BC's lead.
The Hurricanes answered with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff walk to Jason Hagerty, Adan Severino hit a two-run blast to right field to tie the score, 3-3. Jackson gave Miami its first lead of the game, 4-3, when he singled in Dave DiNatale. Three batters later with one out and two runners on, Alonso hit his second homer of the game, a three-run shot, off reliever Chris Kowalski.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the sixth on a pair of singles by Smith and Sam Shaughnessy and a walk to Butera. Miami reliever Anthony Nalepa (1-0) struck out Sanchez looking to keep the Hurricanes lead, 7-3.
Miami added a run in the seventh on a RBI single to center field by Jackson and held on for the 8-3 win.
BC wraps up the three-game series against the Hurricanes, tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Mark Light Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla.
