CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Boston College baseball team (6-7, 0-3 ACC) managed just six singles off Miami (8-1, 3-0 ACC) starter Chris Hernandez and reliever Carlos Gutierrez in a 7-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field.
Six different Eagles collected hits on the day as BC dropped all three games in its first ACC series. Along with a base hit, Barry Butera scored the lone run and swiped his fourth stolen base of the season.
Hernandez (2-0) pitched the first seven innings, and allowed only one run on four hits with four strikeouts to earn the win.
James MacDonald (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season. The junior allowed three earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout in 4.2 innings of work.
Miami got on the scoreboard in the second, as they collected three consecutive two-out hits to grab the lead, 2-0.
In the third inning, Adan Serverino plated Yonder Alonso on a RBI single to increase the Hurricanes lead, 3-0.
Hurricanes starter Chris Hernandez fell into his only trouble of the day in the top of the sixth. The left-hander had only allowed two hits entering the inning, but gave up consecutive singles to Barry Butera and Matt Hamlet to start the frame. With BC base runners on the corners, Tony Sanchez hit a routine double play ball that Miami second baseman Jemile Weeks misplayed. The error allowed Butera to score, and give the Eagles their first run, 3-1. Hernandez worked out of the jam and the Eagles would not threaten again in the contest.
The `Canes tacked on three runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth to round out the scoring, 7-1.
The Eagles return back to Chestnut Hill, Mass. after an 11-day road trip until the next game on March 14 against the Clemson Tigers in Clemson, SC. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
