Football Conducts Second Preseason Scrimmage

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Freshman running back Jeff Smith registered 16 carries for 67 yards while junior place kicker Ryan Ohliger hit 3-of-3 field goal attempts - each from 40-plus yards - to lead the Boston College football team in its second scrimmage of the 2006 preseason in Alumni Stadium on Sunday night.
Smith's 16 carries and 67 yards rushing on the evening each marked scrimmage highs.
Ohliger capped the first drive of the night with a 47-yard field goal. After he connected on a 43-yarder, he had an extra-point attempt blocked by freshman Chris Fox. Ohliger responded by hitting his longest attempt of the night - from 48 yards - to finished 3-for-3.
The first-team offense was led by junior quarterbackMatt Ryan, who completed 10-of-19 passes for 82 yards yet also threw two interceptions. Fellow quarterback Chris Crane completed 5-of-9 passes for 86 yards and one touchdown - a four-yard pass to senior fullback J. Survival Ross - for the second-team offense. Crane also hit freshman wide receiver Warren Wilson with a game-high 43-yard pass earlier on the touchdown drive.
Wilson registered two receptions for 84 yards. Classmate Justin Jarvis caught two passes for 26 yards on the evening while junior Kevin Challenger and redshirt freshman Clarence Megwa had two catches for 24 yards apiece.
Defensively, sophomore linebacker Kevin Akins tallied six tackles, including quarterback sacks on successive plays, and one tackle for a loss. Linebackers Mike McLaughlin and Mark Herzlich also had six tackles each. Herzlich recorded two pass breakups and one sack. Tyronne Pruitt finished with five tackles, including two sacks and one TFL.
