Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - Boston College batters combined for 15 hits to win its first BIG EAST game of the 2000 season, defeating the University of Connecticut 10-1 Sunday in Chestnut Hill. The two teams will square off tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. BC improved to 11-4 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST while dropping the Huskies to 5-5, 0-1.
Paving the way for the Eagle victory was center fielder Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) , who went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs. Mendoza has hit 5-for-7 in the last two games to bring his batting average to .385 on the season.
Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) pitched eight innings, scattering nine hits and fanning five. He was relieved by junior left-hander Mike Stuart (Canton, Mass.) , who threw one scoreless inning.
The Eagles built a 3-0 cushion in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) reached on an error by pitcher Jesse Carlson. With two outs, Jarett Mendoza was hit by a pitch. Then Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.) singled to drive in Hubbard and an error by left fielder Cy Hess advanced both he and Mendoza one base. Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) knocked them both in on a blooper to shallow center field.
The BIG EAST preseason Player of the Year Mike Scott, who went 4-for-5 on the day, drove in teammate Brian Tisbert to trim the lead to 3-1 in the top of the second inning.
Thanks to four hits and a sacrifice fly by Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.), BC added three more runs in the third.
Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) doubled to start off the fourth inning. On his very first pitch, Hubbard cleared the left field wall with his first home run of the 2000 season and sixth in his three-year career to give BC an 8-1 advantage.
BC's nos. four and five batters, Mendoza and McCarthy, each contributed an RBI in the eighth inning.
