CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College fell twice to Connecticut in a BIG EAST doubleheader Monday at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill. The Huskies breezed to a 13-2 victory in game one then capitalized on Ryan Treat's two-run homer in the eighth to post a 6-4 win in the nightcap. UConn improved to 7-5 and 2-1 in the BIG EAST. BC dropped to 11-6 and 1-2 in the loop.
In the top of the eighth, Treat homered off Brendan Nolan (Swampscott, Mass.) to right center, driving in Cy Hess, who reached base on a walk to give the Huskies a 6-3 lead.
Nolan, the losing pitcher, relieved Andy Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.), who started the game but left with an injury after allowing only four hits and one walk in 4.2 innings.
Offensively, Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) had two hits to lead an Eagle squad, which mustered eight hits in nine innings. The Eagles had men in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings but managed only one run in those stanzas while stranding four on base.
The Huskies outhit BC 17-8 in the first game. Both Connecticut designated hitter Jon Robinson and second baseman Brian Tisbert went 3-for-4 in the contest. One of Tisbert's hits went for a home run.
BC's Joe Kealty, who had three hits, answered Tisbert's second-inning dinger with a tape measure round-tripper of his own. Kealty scored both of BC's runs in that game.
Erik Olson (Reading, Mass.) recorded the loss atop the mound for the Eagles. His Husky counterpart, sophomore Pat Sperone, struck out eight and allowed eight hits in a complete-game effort.
The Eagles will look to rebound, visiting Rhode Island Wednesday March 22. Game time is 3 p.m.
