Two-time captain, one of just seven in program history … closed her career ranked in the top 10 on the Eagles’ career list in almost every offensive category: fifth in points (189), sixth in goals (73), third in assists (116), fourth in game-winning goals (14) and power-play goals (21), tied for fifth in plus/minus (+123) … her 154 career games played ties for sixth-most in program history … closed out her career tied for third in career Hockey East assists (76) … was the fifth player in program history to reach the 150-point mark, doing so on Oct. 6, 2018 … was the 17th player in program history to reach the 100-point mark, doing so on Nov. 3, 2017 … at the time, was the sixth fastest player in program history to reach the century mark … often overlooked by media and pundits, Newkirk is one of the most well-rounded and gifted players in college hockey … finished each of her four seasons ranked in the top 25 in the nation in scoring, the only player in the country to do so in each of those four seasons …

Team captain … just the eighth junior captain in program history … a Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star honors … was the Hockey East Player of the Month in January and the Hockey East Player of the Week on Jan. 8 … finished sixth nationally in scoring among Division I players with a career-high 61 points … was fifth nationally in assists (37) … posted Hockey East’s fifth highest single-season assist mark in conference play history (26) … centered the Eagles’ first line and also anchored the team’s top power-play and penalty-kill units … finished the year tied for fifth nationally in power-play goals (8) and 11th in power-play assists (10) … her 18 power-play points were fifth most nationally … netted six game-winning goals to tie for sixth nationally … had a .588 face-off winning percentage, and the 11th-best mark among Division I players who took at least 300 draws on the season … whistled for only eight penalties all season … blocked a career-high 56 shots, tied for the most among players nationally who played as a forward all season … posted at least one point in 32-of-36 games, including a career-long 17-game point streak from Oct. 5 through Dec. 2 … it was the fourth-longest streak in program history, and she collected 27 points in the run … posted 17 multiple-point efforts, including one five-point game (one goal, four assists against New Hampshire on Jan. 5), two four-point games (two goals and two assists at Merrimack on Jan. 9 and four assists at Northeastern on Jan. 13) and four three-point games … had five multiple-goal games, including a hat trick against Northeastern in the first round of the Beanpot (Feb. 6) … added eight games with multiple assists … opened the season with a one-goal, two-assist day against No. 4 Minnesota Duluth (Oct. 5), and added an assist in game two the next day, to start the year with a four-point weekend … recorded two assists at Vermont (Oct. 22) … had one goal and one assist against Maine (Oct. 29) … posted her 100th career point in the Eagles’ 7-4 win over Providence on Nov. 3, becoming the sixth-fastest player in program history at the time to reach the century mark … posted two assists at Syracuse (Nov. 4) and two goals at No. 8 St. Lawrence (Nov. 11) – one day after scoring BC’s lone goal in its only loss of first semester … picked up two assists at Connecticut (Nov. 18), before a two-goal, one-assist day at Harvard (Nov. 22) … after a one-goal, one-assist effort in the 4-2 win at Boston University (Dec. 3), saw her 17-game point streak snap at Merrimack (Dec. 8) … came back out of the winter break with nine points in the two games: four points (two goals, two assists) at Merrimack (Jan. 2) and one goal and four assists against New Hampshire (Jan. 5) … after adding an assist at UNH (Jan. 7), earned Hockey East Player of the Week and NCAA No. 2 Star honors for the week’s work … registered six points (one goal, five assists) in the series split with Northeastern (Jan. 12-13), including a four-assist game in the 5-4, overtime win at Matthews Arena on Jan. 13, which included causing the offensive-zone turnover and setting up Toni Ann Miano’s OT game-winner … scored a goal and added an assist against No. 10 Providence (Jan. 26), before potting a hat trick against Northeastern in the Beanpot First Round (Feb. 6) … set up Miano’s OT power-play game-winner against Boston University (Feb. 13) in the Beanpot Championship … recorded five points (three goals, two assists) in the two-game sweep of Vermont in the teams’ Hockey East Quarterfinal series (Feb. 23-24), including a two-goal, one assist effort in the 6-1 Game 2 win … both of her goals in game two were power-play goals, a new career best … netted one of BC’s two goals in the Hockey East semifinal loss to Connecticut (March 3) … overall, scored six points in three HEA Tournament games.
AS A SOPHOMORE (2016-17)
Hockey East Second Team All-Star … played in 36 games, missing the final three games of the regular season with injury … registered 39 points from 15 goals and 24 assists … finished the season ranked 22nd nationally in points per game (1.08) and points (39) … had a +33 rating, second-best on the team … blocked 36 shots, the most among BC forwards … scored six power-play goals to tie for fifth nationally … her 17 power-play points were fourth-most in the country … tied for second among forwards in Hockey East in points per game (1.33) and finished fourth in scoring (28 points) … was second in Hockey East with 19 assists – behind Megan Keller’s 22 - and her 0.90 assists per game were most among the league's forwards … led the league in power-play points (12) with four goals and eight assists as the Eagles topped the conference with a 23.4 success rate on the man-advantage … was the Hockey East Player of the Month for January after collecting points in eight of the team’s nine games (12 points), including three multiple-point efforts … recorded 11 multiple-point games, including five three-point efforts and one four-point game … tallied her 50th career point at New Hampshire (Oct. 14) – an assist on Megan Keller’s goal to open the game … netted her 75th career point on a power-play goal at Vermont (Jan. 20) … had a career-best four-assist day at Providence (Dec. 3) … assisted on all three goals at Connecticut (Oct. 28), all power-play scores … had one goal and two assists at Boston University (Nov. 5), factoring on all three BC goals … scored two goals and added one assist at New Hampshire (Nov. 11) … had three of BC’s six goals in the two-game Vermont road trip (Jan. 20-21), including both game-winning tallies, the first on Jan. 20 in overtime … scored two goals and assisted on the game-winning goal against Boston University (Jan. 31) in the first round of the Beanpot … scored one goal and recorded two assists against UConn (Feb. 3) … earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors on Feb. 6 for her play against BU in the Beanpot and UConn … picked up one goal and one assist at No. 3 Quinnipiac (Oct. 22) … had one goal and one assist in the NCAA Quarterfinals against No. 6 St. Lawrence (March 11) … played at the Women’s National Team Festival in August, and was selected for the U.S. Under-22 Select Team … played in all three games of the U22’s series with Canada, registering two assists to tie for second in scoring on the team … also called into the full National Team’s Winter Training Camp in December in Plymouth, Mich. … participated in U.S. Olympic Trials in late April/May.
AS A FRESHMAN (2015-16)
Was the runner-up for ACHA National Freshman of the Year … the Hockey East Rookie of the Year and a unanimous selection to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team … a USCHO All-Rookie Team honoree … was a six-time Hockey East Rookie of the Week selection (Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Feb. 15, Feb. 29, March 7, March 21), and the February Rookie of the Month … played in all 41 games, collecting 49 points from 22 goals and 27 assists … her 49 points and 1.20 points per game were both second nationally among freshmen … led all freshmen nationally with 22 goals … her 49 points marked the third-highest freshman-season point total in BC history, behind Kelli Stack ’11 (54) and Haley Skarupa ’16 (53), and the 13th-highest single-season total in program history …her 22 goals were the fifth-most by a BC freshman, while her 27 assists were tied for fourth-most by a rookie in program history … had 12 multiple-point games, which included five multi-goal games and five multi-assist contests … totaled eight three-point games … led the team with a .177 shooting percentage (22 goals on 124 shots) … added five power-play goals and three game-winning goals … helped BC set the NCAA single-season records for points (592) and assists (379), while averaging 5.20 goals per game (fifth-best in NCAA history) and posting a scoring margin of 3.95 (fourth-best in NCAA history) … the Eagles’ 213 goals were the fourth-highest total in NCAA history … picked up an assist in her first collegiate game, a helper on Dana Trivigno’s opening goal against Minnesota Duluth (Oct. 2) in the first game of the season … scored her first college goal against St. Lawrence (Oct. 11) … started her career with a five-game point streak (7 points) … recorded a natural hat trick – the Eagles’ first freshman hat trick since 2012-13 – at Boston University (Nov. 7) … added two goals in wins at No. 9 Cornell (Oct. 24), Merrimack (Jan. 16), No. 6 Northeastern (Feb. 12) and against Maine (Feb. 26) in Game One of the team’s Hockey East Quarterfinal series …had three points in each game of the Eagle’s Beanpot championship run, collecting three assists against Harvard (Feb. 2) in the first round, and adding one goal and two assists against No. 6 Northeastern (Feb. 9) in the championship game … followed the three-point outing against the Huskies with another one – this time two goals, one assist – in the team’s next game against No. 6 Northeastern (Feb. 12) … posted an eight-game point streak from Jan. 22 against Vermont through Feb. 14 at Vermont, during which she collected 15 points … registered eight points in four Hockey East Tournament games, with at least one point in each game: two goals, one assist in game one against Maine (Feb. 26); one goal and one assist in game two (Feb. 27); two assists against Connecticut (March 5) in the semifinals and one assist against Boston University (March 6) in the final … scored the Eagles’ only goal in the NCAA Championship game against No. 3 Minnesota (March 20).
BEFORE BC
Attended Pomfret School in Connecticut for her last three years of high school after transferring from Connections Academy in Arizona … played center and wing for three seasons at Pomfret under head coach – and former BC Eagle – Becky Zavisza, captaining the team as a senior … scored 51 points (31 goals, 20 assists) in her senior season on her way to NEPSAC Division I player of the year honors … a three-time NEPSAC Division I performer (first team in 2014 and 2015 after second-team honors in 2013) … finished her Pomfret career with 118 points … helped lead Pomfret to the 2015 NEPSAC Division I title game … earned a place on USA Today’s ALL-USA girls hockey second team … won the Pomfret Bowl (best class athlete as voted on by the class) and the Cowperthwait Award … began her club career with Team Pittsburgh, helping the team win the U14 AAA national championship and earn a semifinal showing with the U16 team … joined CT Southern Stars’ U19 team and helped the club advance to the U19 AAA semifinals … attended USA Hockey National Development Camp four times (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014).
PERSONAL
Makenna is the only child of Greg Newkirk and Janelle Smith … enrolled in the Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences as an economics major … a member of the honor roll all three years at Pomfret … a volunteer with Special Olympics at home in Arizona … in her spare time, she enjoys traveling … recipient of the Lombardi Family Scholarship Fund.
