Gunnar Johnson and Nick Wang lead the offense with three RBI
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - No. 23 Boston College Baseball (24-11, 9-6 ACC) defeated Dartmouth (6-16, 3-6 Ivy) on Wednesday afternoon, 13-3.Â
Drew Grumbles started for the Eagles and went two innings with three strikeouts while allowing an earned run. John D Mitchell came on for the third inning and allowed two earned runs while striking out one. Peter Schaefer appeared after Mitchell and went two scoreless innings with one strikeout. Matthew Spada relieved Schaefer and pitched a scoreless sixth inning. John Mass came on for the seventh and threw a scoreless inning in his collegiate debut.Â
The Big Green scored the game's first run with a double to the left-center field gap that would score a runner from first.Â
Nick Wang gave Boston College the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run, which was his career high 12th of the year.Â
The Eagles added a third in the bottom of the second when Kyle Wolff had a hard hit ball to left field that allowed Gunnar Johnson to score, who had led off the inning after being hit by a pitch.Â
Dartmouth tied the game at three in the top of the third with a two-run triple to right field that would score runners from first and second.Â
Boston College restored the lead in the bottom half of the inning and made it 6-3. Ty Mainolfi and Jack Toomey would get on base to start the inning with a walk and a single. Carter Hendrickson would bring Mainolfi home with a hard hit single that would also advance Toomey to third base. Toomey would come home to score the next at-bat on a wild pitch to make it 5-3. Hendrickson would score the third run of the inning when Johnson brought him in.Â
The Eagles put up six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase the lead. Colin Larson and Wang would get to second and third with one out for Mainolfi, who would knock the ball into shallow center field, scoring both runners. Toomey would hit a first-pitch double in the next at-bat, which would score Mainolfi from first. A pitch would hit Hendrickson to follow up, and then Boston College executed a double steal to put Toomey and Hendrickson at second and third for Johnson, who would bring both in with a deep double to the wall. Johnson would score the sixth run of the inning when he took third on a passed ball before scoring on a wild pitch.Â
A pitch hit Larson to lead off the bottom of the seventh. He then stole second and third before being brought in on a sacrifice fly from Wang to walk off the game.Â
