Birdball Falls in Series Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - No. 23 Boston College Baseball (24-12, 9-7 ACC) fell to Virginia Tech (16-16, 7-9 ACC) in the first of three games this weekend, 9-8 in 11 innings.
A.J. Colarusso started for the Eagles and went five innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out four. Chase Hartsell relieved Colarusso and pitched a scoreless sixth inning, allowing a hit, while striking out one. Cesar Gonzalez came on in the seventh inning and went four innings, allowing one earned run, while matching his career high in strikeouts with six. Kyle Kipp replaced Gonzalez in the 11th inning and gave up two runs while striking out one.
The Hokies scored first in the top of the first inning with a 438-foot solo home run to deep center field.Â
Boston College tied the game at one in the bottom of the second when Gunnar Johnson doubled down the left field line to score Carter Hendrickson from second.Â
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the second when Jack Toomey lined a single into left to score Ty Mainolfi from third.Â
Virginia Tech retook the lead in the top half of the fourth inning. They were able to put runners on second and third with no outs. The Hokies brought in the runner from third on a groundout to second, which advanced a runner to third. Virginia Tech then launched its second home run of the game, which was a 379-foot two-run homer to left field.Â
The Hokies hit their third home run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth, which was a solo shot that went 362 feet to left field, which made it 5-2.Â
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Toomey would lead off the inning with a walk. Hendrickson then cut the deficit to 5-4 when he hit his first home run as an Eagle, 366 feet to left field.Â
Virginia Tech tacked on a sixth run in the top of the seventh inning with a single to left field that would score a runner from second and make it 6-4.Â
In the bottom of the ninth, Boston College would tie the game at six. Colin Larson would earn a walk before moving to third on a double by Julio Solier. The two would be brought in on a two-run double by Ty Mainolfi that bounced just over the third base line and rolled into left field.Â
The Hokies took the lead in the top of the 10th when a single to right field brought in a runner from second.Â
The Eagles tied it up at seven in the bottom of the 10th. Gunnar Johnson earned a walk and was replaced by Ben Williams. Williams stole second before being advanced to third on a groundout by Danny Surowiec. Williams then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.Â
In the top of the 11th, Virginia Tech made it 8-7 when they hit a triple to the wall, which scored a runner from first. They added a second run in the inning when a single to right field brought in the runner from third.Â
Boston College got a run back in the bottom of the 11th when Jack Toomey doubled and then advanced to third on a groundout. He then scored to make it 9-8 on a wild pitch.Â
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. when they take on the Hokies in game two of the series for the 14th Annual ALS Awareness Game.Â
