Eagles Defeat FGCU in Come-From-Behind Victory
February 28, 2026 | Baseball
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Boston College Baseball (5-3) defeated Florida Gulf Coast (8-2) in the first of three games on Friday night, 10-4.
A.J. Colarusso started for the Eagles and went 4.2 innings with four strikeouts before giving way to Cesar Gonzalez and Gavin Soares, who combined to earn the win and save, respectively. Soares recorded a season-high six strikeouts en route to his second save of the season.
The game started as a pitcher's duel, as neither team could get a run across the plate, and both worked out of their own jams to keep the game scoreless. In the bottom of the fourth inning, FGCU managed to get the first run of the game off of a deep single to center field.
In the fifth, FGCU tacked on three more runs, including a solo shot to deep center field, as they led 4-0 after five.
Boston College finally got on the board at the top of the sixth inning when Ty Mainolfi scored after an error by the pitcher trying to field a bunt attempt by Kyle Wolff. The Eagles then proceeded to load the bases after Esteban Garcia drew a walk. Gunnar Johnson earned a walk of his own that helped score Jack Toomey. Ben Williams tied the game at four when he lined a single up the middle for his career hit and RBIs.
Boston College tacked on three more in the seventh, when Mainolfi was brought in from second after a double to left field. The Eagles loaded the bases once more after Johnson was hit by a pitch, which brought up Williams, and for the second time, he laced a single to left field, which brought in Toomey and Owen DeShazo, making it 7-4.
Boston College continued its offensive output in the eighth when Wolff hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which brought in Mainolfi for his third run of the game. After Mainolfi scored, Toomey, who had earned a walk before the Wolff sacrifice fly, stole second. DeShazo's first home run since 2023 brought him in, as he launched it 352 feet to right field and made it 10-4.
Soares closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth by striking out two of his final three batters to seal the win.
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action tomorrow night for the second game of the series with Florida Gulf Coast at 5:00 p.m.
