SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Boston College Baseball (4-3) defeated Cornell (0-4), 7-6, in their first game this morning before falling to Northwestern (5-2), 8-5, this afternoon.
Cornell
Tyler Mudd started for the Eagles in game one and matched his career high with six innings, giving up two hits while striking out five. Chase Hartsell and John Kwiatkowski came on in relief for the final three innings, with Hartsell picking up the win and Kwiatkowski the save.
Ty Mainolfi got Boston College started offensively in the bottom of the first with a two-out single. Jack Toomey then brought in Mainofli on his second triple of the weekend to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Mudd retired the first seven batters he faced before allowing two batters to reach in the top of the third. He then got out of the inning, but in the top of the fourth, the Big Red took their first lead of the game when they got two runs across the plate.
In the bottom half of the inning, Kyle Wolff hit a groundout to help score Mainolfi for the second time and make it 2-2.
An inning later, in the bottom of the fifth, Boston College quickly got runners on first and second after a pitch hit Colin Larson, and then Cesar Gonzalez hit a line drive down the third base line. Sean Martinez laid a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, moving the runners, before a balk by Cornell scored Larson. Julio Solier flew out to right field to bring in Gonzalez and make it 4-2.
Both teams went quickly in the sixth and seventh before the Big Red launched a two-run homer to center field to tie it all at four in the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Toomey started off the inning by singling and then advancing to third on an error by the Cornell right fielder. Wolff then walked to give Boston College runners on the corners for Owen DeShazo, who bunted into a fielder's choice as Toomey was thrown out at home. Gunnar Johnson was then brought on as a pinch hitter and proceeded to hit a three-run home run to deep right field, making it 7-4.
In the top of the ninth, the Big Red tacked on two more runs before Kwiatkowski came on and closed out the game for the Eagles.
Northwestern
Drew Grumbles got the start for Boston College in the second game and went for three innings before being replaced by Jacob Burnham, who pitched four innings, nearly matching his career high. The Eagles used four other pitchers to finish out the game.
Boston College opened the scoring for the second straight game when Mainolfi reached first on an error by the Northwestern pitcher. He then moved to second on a walk by Toomey and stole third as part of an Eagles double steal. He then scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
The Wildcats then tied it up at one when they got a run across the plate after an error by Boston College with two outs.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles struck again when Martinez and Solier singled to give Boston College runners on first and second with no outs. Nick Wang then struck out, but the Northwestern catcher dropped the third strike, allowing Martinez and Solier to advance. Mainolfi then singled to bring in both Martinez and Solier to make it 3-1.
The game went quickly until the top of the eighth when the Wildcats scored seven runs to make it 8-3.
The Eagles cut into that lead when Solier singled in Ben Williams to make it 8-4.
After holding Northwestern scoreless in the top of the ninth, Jack Toomey led off the bottom of the ninth with his second home run of the season, which made it 8-5. Boston College then finished the inning without getting another run across.
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action on Friday in Fort. Myers, Fla., when they take on Florida Gulf Coast at 6:30 p.m.
