Boston College and New Orleans Split Saturday Doubleheader
February 22, 2025 | Baseball
Eagles will resume play Tuesday afternoon at Rhode Island
Game Two
The Eagles' offense made a statement in the opening frame, with Patrick Roche sparking a two-out rally with a double to the right-center gap. Nick Wang followed suit, opening the scoring with an RBI double to left. Vince Cimini made it 2-0 with an RBI single back up the middle, scoring Wang from second.
A.J. Colarusso started on the bump for BC, and struck out two in a scoreless first inning. In the top of the second, a beautifully placed squeeze bunt from Sam McNulty pushed the Eagles' lead to 3-0, scoring Jack Toomey from third after he singled earlier in the inning.
New Orleans drew one back in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly, narrowly beating the throw from Toomey at home.
Colarusso exited after three innings of one-run work, striking out four with no walks issued. Freshman Cesar Gonzalez took over in the fourth and delivered two scoreless frames, surrendering just one hit across the seven batters he faced. Gonzalez went on to earn the win (1-0), his first of his college career.
The Eagles added insurance in the sixth and eighth innings, first courtesy of Josiah Ragsdale, who roped a two-run triple to the right-center gap in the top of the sixth. In the eighth, the team's early home run leader Kyle Wolff added to the tally, driving the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence to extend the BC lead to 11-3.
The Boston College pitchers delivered in the first game of the doubleheader, with Cesar Gonzalez, Dylan Howanitz, Karl Meyer, Gavin Soares, and Joe Gold all producing scoreless outings from the bullpen. Meyer, Soares, and Gold all made their first appearances in a BC uniform, and all recorded at least one strikeout. Howanitz, in his second outing in as many weekends, struck out two over a scoreless sixth inning.
Josiah Ragsdale, Patrick Roche, Nick Wang, and Sam McNulty all logged multi-hit efforts in the early game.
Game Three
Graduate student Alex Bryant started game three for the Eagles, making his first appearance in a BC uniform. Bryant went three and a third, making it through three scoreless frames before New Orleans got to him for four earned runs in the fourth inning, when Tyler Mudd took over on the bump. New Orleans brought one more home in the frame, taking a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning.
The Eagles got one back in the top of the fifth via an RBI single from Josiah Ragsdale. Adam Magpoc followed suit in the top of the sixth, roping an RBI double over the right fielder's head to bring home Patrick Roche, who led off the inning with a single. Magpoc advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Jack Toomey pop fly that dropped into the infield, making it a 5-3 ballgame.
BC continued its rally into the seventh, with Patrick Roche and Nick Wang logging back-to-back RBIs to tie the game at 5-5. With a runner on second in the bottom of the frame, Tyler Mudd delivered an enormous strikeout to keep the game even, and finish off the third straight scoreless inning from New Orleans.
Patrick Roche opened the ninth inning with a bang, driving his first home run of the season over the left field fence to give BC its first lead of the game at 6-5. New Orleans responded in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings. The sides both went scoreless in the 10th, with Roche laying out to snag a popped-up bunt attempt and prevent the runner on first to advance to scoring position.
New Orleans loaded the bases in the bottom of the eleventh, and a hit-by-pitch ended the game in 11 innings, with New Orleans taking game three 7-6. Bobby Chicoine was issued the loss (0-1).
The Eagles will return home before traveling to Rhode Island for a midweek contest this Tuesday afternoon, and will host Stonehill in the 2025 home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Harrington Athletics Village.
