EVANSTON, ILL. - Boston College lacrosse showcased a stingy defensive effort in a 13-9 win over No. 2 Northwestern on Saturday afternoon at Ryan Fieldhouse.
The Eagles snapped Northwestern's 47-game home win streak en route to a 3-0 start. The Wildcats fall to 2-1 on the season.
Michaela O' Connor led the team with a pair of caused turnovers and three ground balls. Shea Baker and Abbey Herod led the team with three draw controls.
Shea Dolce stopped six shots and led the team with four ground balls.
Kylee Colbert and Molly Driscoll stepped up in a big way for the Eagles, as both posted hat tricks to pace the offense. It was a career-high in goals for Colbert, while it's the second straight three-goal game for Driscoll.
Eight different Eagles scored, while Mia Mascone (1 goal, 2 assists) and Rachel Clark (2 goals, 1 assist) netted three points.
It was a defensive stalemate in the first quarter, as neither team scored until the 7:52 mark when Driscoll found the back of the net. Colbert scored twice in the opening frame to give BC the 3-0 edge at the end of the first. Dolce made a pair of stops in the period to keep the NW offense at bay.
Clark got the offense going in the second period, as her first goal started a 3-0 spurt to give the visitors a 6-0 edge. Northwestern responded with two straight goals before Driscoll stopped the run. BC and NW traded goals before the half, giving the Eagles an 8-4 lead at the half.
BC got off to another strong start thanks to Clark and Mascone scoring within a 36-second span to stretch the cushion to six, 10-4. However, the Wildcats went on a 4-0 surge into the fourth quarter to slice the deficit to two.
Devon Russell produced a timely score from Mascone to push the lead back up to three with four minutes left. After Northwestern tallied its final netter, Colbert delivered the dagger to help BC pull away. Shea Baker scored to give BC the four-goal win.
BC returns to action against UMass on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Fish Field House.
