Ben Hong takes medalist honors on third playoff hole over teammate Markus Lam
VERONA, N.Y. -- Boston College's Ben Hong won the individual title with a birdie on the third playoff hole, outlasting teammate Markus Lam at the Red Bandanna Invitational, held at Turning Stone's Kaluyhat Course.
Lam's strong play down the stretch forced the playoff between the two Eagles, as a double bogey by Hong at 18 put the two in a deadlock at 1-under through 54 holes. Drawing even through the playoff holes on 18 and 1, the two again played 18, with Hong sticking his approach to within 10 feet. He knocked in the birdie putt and took home the medal.
As a team, Boston College took home the victory, outlasting runner-up North Dakota State by 24 strokes. The Eagles finished at 3-over par, with a 54-hole team score of 867 (284-289-294). It marks the first season-opening win for BC since the 2014 season. That year, the Eagles captured the CCSU Blue Devils Fall Invitational.
Last year, Boston College finished second by two shots behind winner West Virginia in the Red Bandanna Invitational's first edition. BC has opened its fall season in a tournament at Turning Stone for each of the past four - and seven of the last eight seasons.
Hong and Lam finished the 54 holes of play at 1-under par. Hong (69-73-73) saw his best round come during Sunday's morning session, while Lam bookended his weekend with a pair of 70's.
Christian Emmerich (73-71-75=219) tied for sixth place, while Jack Pogorelc tied for ninth (72-72-76=220). In total, four Eagles finished in the top 10.
Brian Xu, in his first tournament for BC, finished in 27th place (82-73-80=235). A trio of individuals also competed, led by Tommy Mangan's 41st place finish (76-82-84=242).
