Eagles Face Penn in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The third-seeded Eagles host No. 13 Penn in the second round of the 2023 Division I NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday at the Newton Lacrosse and Soccer Field at 1 p.m.

About the Eagles
Last Time Out
The Eagles went 3-0 at the ACC Tournament en route to capturing their first ACC title with an 11-9 win. BC was trailing 9-6 before reeling off five straight goals. Belle Smith delivered the eventual game-winning score before Andrea Reynolds added an insurance score. The defense highlighted the game, limiting the UNC defense to just two goals in the second half and held UNC scoreless over the final 22:57 of the game. Shea Dolce was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after posting 19 saves in three contests. Belle Smith, Jenn Medjid, Cassidy Weeks and Sydney Scales were named to the all-tournament team.
Success in the Tournament
The Eagles have been to 11 NCAA Tournaments, including the previous 10 while advancing to the national title game the last five seasons. BC has also won its last 10 NCAA Tournament games hosted at Newton.

- Give the Eagles an 11th straight win, which would be the longest since the 2019 season.

Eagles Raking in Awards
Seven Eagles were named to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region Team, while were named to the USA Lacrosse All-American Team the day before. The seven players that made the all-region squad will be eligible for the IWLCA All-American Team, which will come out later this month. All seven made the USA Lax Magazine as well. Belle Smith, Jenn Medjid, Sydney Scales, Cassidy Weeks, and Mckenna Davis made the first team, while Melanie Welch and Hunter Roman landed on the second team list. The same seven made the USA Lacrosse Magazine list along with Hollie Schleicher and Shea Dolce.
Defense Locking in
The defense was dominant in the ACC Tournament, holding all three opponents to under 10 goals, held Notre Dame to a season-low four goals and allowed zero goals in the final 22:57 against North Carolina. The Eagles are 11-1 this season with at least five caused turnovers, while boasting an 11-0 mark when allowing 15 or fewer shots.
Offensive Balance
Through the three ACC Tournament games, six players have at least five points with Kayla Martello (7 goals/1 assist) and Davis (2 goals/6 assists) leading the team with eight points. Martello and Medjid both have seven goals, and Smith and Weeks have five scores.
Scouting Penn (14-4, 7-0 Ivy League)
- Penn advanced to the second round with a 13-8 win against UConn on Friday.
- Niki Miles and Maria Themelis each scored four goals in the victory.
- Penn held just a 6-5 lead at halftime before scoring six in the third to gain separation.
- Miles leads the team with 61 goals, and is one of two players with Anna Brandt (51 goals) with at least 50 scores.
- Miles also leads the way with 76 points, and Erika Chung's 38 assists is a team best.
- Kelly Van Hoesen has started in all 18 contests between the post. She is 14-4 on the season with a 10.03 goals against average.
