BC Drops Doubleheader to Clemson
March 31, 2023 | Softball
Eagles move to 16-16 after a tough start to the series
CHESTNUT HILL, MASS – Boston College lost 8-4 and 7-3 respectively in games one and two of the three game series to the No. 5 ranked Clemson in Friday's doubleheader. BC is now 16-16 on the season and 1-7 in ACC play while the Tigers remain red hot, improving their record to 35-1 overall and 11-0 in the conference. They also have now won 21 straight gamesÂ
In game one of the day, Clemson was able to get out to an early 2-0 lead but Senior Maddy Carpe responded in the bottom of the second inning with a two run homer to tie up the game.Â
Unfortunately for the Eagles, that was about all the offense they could muster through the rest of the game. The key moments of the game came in the top of the sixth when the Tigers rattled off a five run inning, including home runs from Valerie Cagle and Aby Vieira.Â
Graduate pitcher Susannah Anderson got the start in the circle in the first game of today, she pitched five innings and recorded two strikeouts. For Clemson, Millie Thompson got the start and the win, she recorded nine strikeouts and allowed just two hits in five innings pitched.Â
The second game of today felt eerily similar to the previous one. BC was able to keep themselves in the game early on, even taking a 3-2 lead in the second inning and holding the explosive Tigers offense to just three runs through five innings. But it almost seems as if this team can simply flip a switch and overwhelm opponents when they feel like it, Clemson scored four runs in the final two innings to seal the game at 7-3, despite the valiant effort at the end of the game as the bases were loaded with a chance for the Eagles to make a last second comeback.Â
Despite the loss on her starting record, Sophomore pitcher Abby Dunning played a good game, pitching a complete game and recording five strikeouts in 29 at bats. For Clemson, Valerie Cagle continued to show why she is one of the best players in the country. Not only is she a great hitter but she also is one of the best pitchers, she pitched five innings and allowed just two hits on her way to her 17th win of the season. Her record as a starter is now 17-1.Â
The series will get wrapped up with game three on Sunday at 12 PM EST.Â
