BC scored four unanswered runs, but couldn't overcome 5-0 deficit.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The No. 13 Boston College baseball team could not climb out of an early five-run hole as it fell to Georgia Tech, 5-4, at the Harrington Athletics Village on Friday afternoon. The Eagles fell to 18-6 overall and 6-4 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 17-9 and 6-4.
Â
Georgia Tech jumped on graduate right-hander Henry Leake (Burbank, Calif.) with timely hitting in the early innings. The Yellow Jackets got three runs with two two-strike, two-out hits in the top of the first. They added two more runs in the third on a double by third baseman Drew Compton, who previously singled in a pair in the first.
Â
The BC bullpen steadied the ship and put up five-shutout innings as the lineup began to chip away beginning in the sixth. Georgia Tech was willing to trade outs for runs in the sixth and seventh, but the Eagles were able to trim the deficit to two on a RBI-single on the infield by senior center fielder Barry Walsh (Sterling, Mass.).
Â
Boston College started the eighth with back-to-back doubled by junior first baseman Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) and junior second baseman Patrick Roche (Milton, Mass.) to make it a one-run game, but a fly ball and two strikeouts after a pitching change ended the Eagle threat.
Â
In the ninth, sophomore RHP Julian Tonghini (New Canaan, Conn.) struck out the side to get BC back to the plate for the home half. RHP Terry Busse secured his seventh save with a scoreless-frame as Walsh was stranded as the tying run after a two-out, infield-single.
Â
Leake (3-2) took the loss in four innings of work with five runs charged to his line on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. RHP Luke Schmolke (4-0) got the win in five innings of one-run ball on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts.
