Virginia Outlasts BC in 12 Innings, 2-1
April 03, 2021 | Softball
Susannah Anderson turned in the fourth-longest outing in BC history
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia defeated Boston College 2-1 in 12 innings to close out the series win on Saturday at Palmer Park. Despite the loss, BC's Susannah Anderson turned in one of the best pitching performances in school history, throwing a complete game (11.1 innings) on Saturday.
The 11.1 innings pitched were the fourth-best single-game total in school history. She held Virginia to just two runs and struck out six in her third complete game of the four-game series.
It marked the first time since February 24, 2018 that BC played a game that went at least 12 innings.
Boston College grabbed the lead in the third inning when freshman second baseman Nicole Giery doubled to left field to plate CC Cook for the 1-0 advantage.
It marked the first time all series BC scored first.
Virginia finally got to Anderson for one run in the sixth to tie it at one. Tori Gilbert singled to right field with two outs to even things up.
BC had a chance to take the lead in the ninth, but the Eagles left the bases loaded. BC left 10 runners on base over the first nine innings of play. In all, BC stranded 12 runners on the day.
With the bases loaded in the 12th, Virginia (11-18, 7-14 ACC) used an infield single to win it.
Boston College (6-18, 2-11 ACC) returns to action Wednesday at Harrington Athletics Village versus Rhode Island. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m. on ACC Network.
