Eagles roll past UMass Lowell 9-1
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Junior pitcher Peyton Schnackenberg won her first career game at Boston College as the Eagles rolled to a 9-1 victory over UMass Lowell Wednesday afternoon at Harrington Athletics Village.
Â
BC (5-7) won its third straight game and remained undefeated in five all-time meetings against UMass Lowell (2-3).
Â
Schnackenberg (1-0) held the River Hawks to just one run on four hits and struck out four in her first start of the year.
Â
BC got on the board first with a two-out rocket off the bat of Nicole Giery to drive in Djhane Valido for the 1-0 lead. UMass Lowell avoided the big inning as UML starter Ryley White stranded the bases loaded to end the first.
Â
Boston College exploded for five runs in the third as Gianna Boccagno drove in two runs with a blast off the wall and Kristin Giery launched a towering, two-run home run in the five-run third.
Â
UMass Lowell snapped a streak of 15.2 scoreless innings from the BC pitching staff in the fifth with a run before the Eagles scored three in the home half of the inning to end the game after five.
Â
Ellie Mataya continued her stellar start to the season going 2-for-4 with two triples, a run batted in and run scored while Nicole Giery went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI for the victors.
Â
Emme Martinez added two hits as BC finished the afternoon with a season-high 11 hits. Over BC's three-game winning streak, the Eagles have racked up 30 hits and scored 27 runs.
Â
Boston College looks to extend its winning streak to four games on Thursday against local foe Boston University. The two Commonwealth Avenue rivals will play just a single game tomorrow beginning at noon on ACC Network Extra. The originally scheduled doubleheader was changed to just one game due to the weather forecast in Boston.
