Birdball Homestand Begins With Holy Cross Wednesday

Eagles host Holy Cross to begin stretch of eight straight home games.
The Eagles are 9-5 on the season, while the Crusaders make their season debut. BC, which has won each of its two previous home games, has hit 18 home runs in 14 games. Sophomore third baseman Luke Gold has hit five, while slugging .732 and hitting .339. Junior center fielder Sal Frelick is hitting a team-best .407 and slugging .712 with four home runs. Graduate right-hander Alex Stiegler, a transfer from Yale, makes his first start on the mound as an Eagle. In five relief appearances, he is 1-0 with a 6.35 earned run average, one save and 19 strikeouts in 14 innings.
Boston College defeated Holy Cross in its 2020 season opener, the Crusaders' last game played, 10-7. The Eagles built a 5-1 lead after two innings, but Holy Cross battled back with two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to tie it before BC pulled away with a three-run bottom of the sixth. Jack Cunningham drew a bases-loaded walk to put BC back in front in the sixth. Gold immediately pushed the Eagle lead to 8-5 with a two-run double past third base. Boston College used five pitchers; the first four coming from the freshman class. Right-hander Evan Moore went 2.2 innings in the start and struck out four. Lefty Daniel Baruch got the win in two innings of relief. Ryan Smith got his first career save; entering with the bases loaded and one ou in the ninth.
