Eagles Open 2021 Season Against No. 4 Virginia and Virginia Tech

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College men's tennis begins the 2021 season with a pair of home matches this weekend at the Weymouth Club. The Eagles host No. 4 Virginia on Friday (Feb. 19) at 3 p.m. before facing Virginia Tech on Sunday (Feb. 21) at 10 a.m. Live results will be available for both matches at BCEagles.com.

SEASON PREVIEW
• Boston College went 2-5 in seven matches before the remainder of the 2019-20 season was cancelled due to COVID-19
• The Eagles registered wins against Charlotte on the road and Merrimack at home
• BC visited Virginia in late January and fell 6-1 as Sean Mullins picked up the lone point, beating RJ Fresen in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in fifth singles
• Mullins beat Matthew Fung of Louisville in No. 6 singles a week later and finished the spring season a perfect 6-0
• Four freshmen have joined the 2021 roster: Bennett Turner (Charlotte, N.C.), Will Kasten (Lake Forest, Ill.), Matt Campbell (Sudbury, Mass.) and Shreekar Eedara (Danville, Calif.)
• Max Mendelsohn and Mullins will captain the squad this season

• Virginia moved up from No. 7 to No. 4 in the most recent ITA national rankings
• The Cavaliers enter the weekend at 6-2 overall following their first two defeats of the season to top-10 opponents North Carolina and Illinois in the ITA Indoor Championships
• UVA defeated then-No. 14 Wake Forest by a 5-2 final on Feb. 6 in Charlottesville
• Graduate student Carl Söderlund is ranked 29th in the country in singles, while Söderlund and Matthew Lord rank 35th in doubles

• Virginia Tech is 3-2 overall entering the weekend and will not play a match on Friday prior to visiting Boston College
• The Hokies shut out Davidson 7-0 last Saturday in Blacksburg and suffered a narrow 4-3 road loss to UNC back on Jan. 31
• VT also has home wins over Old Dominion and Middle Tennessee State this season
• Grad student Mitch Harper is ranked 38th in the country in singles after finishing last season 9-0 and ranked 47th nationally
