Junior allows just two hits in BC’s first win of the season
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Boston College junior pitcher Susannah Anderson tossed a complete game shutout as the Eagles earned their first win of the year with a 2-0 victory at North Florida Saturday in game one of a doubleheader.
UNF (1-3) bounced back with a three-run fifth inning in game two to break a scoreless tie as the Ospreys responded with a 3-1 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
Anderson was simply dominant, allowing just two hits as she retired 14 consecutive batters at one point. She only allowed a single in the first inning and in the seventh as she won her first game of the season. Anderson struck out six and walked just two batters in the shutout.
Anderson now has 15 career complete games and she moved into sole possession of fourth place in Boston College career history with her eighth shutout.
Jenna Ergle delivered BC's first hit of the season – a solo home run to left – to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. It was the ninth home run of Ergle's career.
The Eagles doubled their lead in the top of the third as leadoff hitter as Ellie Mataya crushed a standup double to left-center to give BC a 2-0 lead.
The two-run lead was more than enough for Anderson, who retired 14 straight batters until a leadoff single in the seventh.
In game two, UNF took its first lead of the doubleheader as Rebecca Koskey hit a solo home run in the home half of the fifth inning to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The Ospreys added two additional runs in the frame, both coming with two outs, to lead 3-0 after five innings of play.
The Eagles got a run back in the top of the sixth as Djhane Valido picked up her third hit of the game to bring in Kamryn Warman to cut the deficit to 3-1. It marked the first three-hit game of Valido's career.
BC would bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but UNF starter Halle Arends worked out of the jam for the complete game victory.
Boston College (1-2) closes out the weekend Sunday morning versus Jacksonville at 9 a.m.
