Minutewomen Upset Eagles in Season Debut
February 08, 2020 | Lacrosse
AMHERST, Mass. -- The No. 5 Boston College women's lacrosse team suffered its first regular season loss since 2017 in its season opener, falling to Massachusetts, 15-11, on Saturday. Junior Charlotte North tallied three goals in the effort to lead the team in her debut in maroon and gold.
North tallied the first goal of the season for the Eagles, coming in on a free position shot to take a 1-0 lead with 26:42 remaining in the opening half. Back-to-back UMass goals took the lead from the Eagles, but senior Cara Urbank connected with North for the Eagles' second goal of the game. The Minutewomen tallied two straight again to take a 4-2 lead before freshman Ryan Smith found classmate Annie Walsh for a score with 14:11 to go in the first half. UMass answered again with two straight goals, but Jordan Lappin capped the scoring for the half with 3:04 left as BC found itself down, 6-4.
Â
Redshirt freshman Cassidy Weeks opened the second half after finding a feed from Jenn Medjid to close the Eagles' deficit to just one score. Three straight goals from the Minutewomen cut BC's momentum, but the Eagles quickly regrouped to tally five straight goals from Medjid, Lappin, North, Urbank and Paisley Eagan to gain their first lead of the half. The Eagles struggled to maintain possession in the draw circle, leading to a 6-1 run in UMass's favor to wrap up the contest.
