ATHENS, Ga. - The Boston College softball team split a pair of games to open the Bulldog Classic, at Jack Turner Stadium, in Athens, Georgia on Friday, Feb. 28. The Eagles downed Western Carolina, 3-1, before falling to No. 18 Georgia, 6-2.
Two freshmen led the way for BC, as Djhane Valido and AJ Alatorre both hit their first-career home runs in the Eagles' win.Â
Western Carolina opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, when they homered to center field. It was the first home run the Eagles' had given up all season.
CC Cook pitched five innings for BC, allowing only four hits and the one run with four strikeouts. Susannah Anderson relieved her in the sixth, throwing two scoreless innings and picking up the win.
BC then got on the board when Valido hit a solo home run to left field.
Alatorre then gave the Eagles' the lead when she hit a two-run shot down the right field line to score pinch-runner Britney Richardson.Â
BC tied a season-high eight hits on the game, led by Emme Martinez's 2/4 outing.
In the second game of the day, the Eagles faced a nationally-ranked Georgia, falling 6-2.
Anderson started for BC, throwing three innings and allowing three runs. She was relieved by Haley White, who threw three innings of work and gave up three runs.
BC showed life in the seventh inning, though. With the bases loaded, Valido earned a walk, which scored pinch-runner Gianna Sarlo. The next batter, Abigail Knight, did the same, earning a walk to score Richardson pinch-running.
